Why research "Farming" further?

Please correct me if I’am wrong, but I think it’s completely unnecessary to research the tech line: Farming. I mean if you are boosting your population above 12b on your "normal" planets you quickly get them overpopulated and demoralised. An advanced farming tech allows you to just increase the size of your people, but why should I research further? I have anyhow enough trouble keeping them content…
I’m playing since a long time, but possibly miss something here…

In DA, I will research these techs so I can sell them to the aI. I will cancel the upgrades to my own farms when I get them.

No other reason to research them otherwise.

I'm new to the game so this may be a ignorant comment, but could you possibly reclaim colony spaces for other things (i.e. rather than 2 farm for 4 1 farm for 4)?

I build one farm per planet, no matter what the size. I never build farms on farm bonus tiles, and I never build any farms on 'home' planets where the default max pop is 12b. I let my farms build all the way up to advanced, so my galaxy-wide pop limit will be 13b per planet (12b for 'home' planets). I also build one morale building per planet. Along with racial morale bonuses, this usually lets me keep approval around 100% at about 49-50% taxation once the game takes off.

Also, if a planet is not to be a major industrial or research planet, I just build a couple of factories and a frakload of econ buildings. Most of my PQ 10 and below planets become nothing but big revenue generators, without even a starport.

A population of 13b gives a really good ROI on my econ planets; with one farm and one morale building, the income from the econ buildings is better than it would be if I added another farm (and the several morale buildings it would take to keep the planet happy) or if I built no farms or morale buildings.

Even on my industry/research intense planets, I still build the farm and morale building - not so much for the income, but for the invasion fodder and invasion protection those extra bodies provide. Those can come in very handy, especially if you're caught off guard by a declaration of war.

@jfuqua, yes, you can build new improvements on top of old ones, or just use the demolish option. I always build over excess farms when I capture a planet.

Spore. When you absolutely, positively got to kill every motherfrakker in the galaxy. Accept no substitutes.

True in some situations. But if you can get your native morale ability very high (you have all morale "wonders", and mining more than one morale resouce), you can afford growing more pop on your planets AND still having taxes at 79%. This additional pop will give you 10%-20% more taxes than a planet with 9B pop, more influence and better resistance to invasions, all that for free!

I research and sell it to the AI.
I do this for 2 reasons

1 - I get a good amount of money for it, which is nice.
2 - hopefully, I'll trick the AI into building or auto upgrading thier planets with these farms. This kills thier morale.

This way, especially for nicer planets I can use the money I got for selling farms to fund revolts when I invade (information warfare) and I get a nice new planet, which is cool.

Sounds like moral in DA is even more horrific than in DL?

Welcome to the tricky, smashy and dangerous world of DA !

I liked all the feedbacks above, especially "selling these farming techs to other civilisations in order to let them be demoralized with population growth..." Human Intelligence > AI...

Hehe, not always. =P

Always, because an AI could never come up with this:

I research it all the way because

1: I almost always go for military vic and so I am invading planets like crazy by the time I am building farms and so those 13-16 billion pop planets come in very handy when i am wanting soldiers .

2: When almost all my planets are 13B + it is very hard for the AI to win invasions when they send ships with usully less then 4B soldiers
