Some 3D (pre-render?) graphics not displaying.

All of a sudden, I am having an issue where some game elements are not displaying.
Such examples are:
1. When selecting the size of the galaxy the stars are not rotating, just the backdrop.
2. GNN News anchor animation is missing and just a static 2D version is there.
3. the rotating technology artifact is not spinning, just a black square.
4. The planet on the splash page is not rotating.
I am assuming these are pre-rendered graphics that are not displaying. Do you know what could be the cause? It happened after the 1.6 upgrade.
This happens in both Game Chapters.
