Pirate Swarm

I was on the verge of being wiped put in my most recent game, I went very tech heavy from the start and because of this my military production was lacking. So I had good weapons just not much production capacity to create ships to use them. Thankfully for most if the game everyone liked me, so I was left alone. As the larger civ's started gobbling up the smaller civ's I knew my time was short. I had two options boost my military or start influencing nearby planets over to my side. I was a neutral civ. So no one would ally with me.
So I decided to boost my military, I was looking good and then the pirate swarm mega event hit and destroyed every ship I had and every ship all the other civ's had. it occured to me that since no one could build ships in any number to attack me and I couldn't build any ships, lets just go for a tech victory. As I was teching up everyone left declared war on me but could not get to me because of all the over powered pirates sitting in my space.
Easy Tech victory without fighting a single battle, never would have guessed the game would end like that. Just goes to show how unpredictable the game can be.

Yea, I had a recent saved by the bell experience too. I was at war with two civs and just barely holding my ground. Then a random event that substantially reduced moral galaxy wide occured.

The other civs decided that they better focus there attention on boosting moral, and offered me a peace treaty with some extra cash and techs included in the deal.

My moral was already substantially above average before the event, and I was able to recover fairly quickly.

Exactly the same thing with the pirates happened to me. Actually I was already dreaming about a tech victory and then the pirates came and blocked the game until Icould easily achieve it.

But I must say I really think this mega event is overdone, especially as it is called Pirates: pirates should sneak around, attacking traders, not wiping out whole star fleets. Save that for the Dread Lord Surge.

I agree, why should pirates be stronger than the combined strength of multiple space empires. I don't mind that they are so powerful, what bugs me is how many of them there are. Although it is called a swarm so I guess it makes sense.

It would make sense if that "surge" or swarm were done for the dread lords, but defintely not pirates. This scenario is more like Jack Sparrow stealing the ring from Frodo and runnng amuck with it in a spaceship. After and hour or two of it I wanted to say enough of the lunacy already.

Still the best game out there. Even with the roided up pirate fleets.

if I remember correctly, Pirates appears with the highest tech of weapons and armor researched so far in the game. If you have max out 1 weapon tree. Guess what the pirates will have when they appear. Perhaps they are "Pirates" simply because no one knows where they come from. Could be a prelude to Galciv 3?
