Icon Packager Vista 64 Upgrade

Icon Packager Vista 64 Upgrade

Will there be an upgrade path and when? - Bait and Switch

I used OD for years, and having just finished building a new machine I decided to start using icon packager again after having my subscription lapse.

I downloaded the newest Icon Packager (released June 8th according to Download.com). When I tried to install it on my Vista 64bit machine it told me that the public version did not support 64 bit, but the enhanced (read:pay) version did - so I went and bought IconPackager. After it failed to install on my V64bit machine:

"Unable to locate C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_Microsoft.VC80.ATL_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_x-ww_a08a3e21\ATL80.dll"

I began reading up only to discover that IP is NOT in fact Vista 64 compatible. Unfortunatly that is not what the message said, it simply said the public version was not compatible. This is a little like bait and switch if you as me, seeing as there is no way to actually try a 64 bit version before you buy.

So. Short of demanding my money back - when is the Vista 64 version due (previous posts simply say "soon" or "in the works"? AND will I get it for free. I will wait for the new version if there is a free upgrade for a purchase made today. If not, I'll talk to accounting...

Thanks,

Kevin

Thanks for the help Finhbar. However, my steps are almost exactly the same as yours. Unfortunately, iconpackager still don't run.

I went into the Iconpackager directory and tried to run the IconPackager64.exe and here is what I get...

sigh...

[Window Title]
D:\Program Depot\X86 Programs\Stardock\Object Desktop\IconPackager\IconPackager64.exe

[Content]
D:\Program Depot\X86 Programs\Stardock\Object Desktop\IconPackager\IconPackager64.exe

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail.

[OK]

It sounds to me like it doesn't like where you've got IconPackager installed to there, leth, but I could be/probably am wrong, lol. Have you tried installing it to the default Directory (C:\Program Files (x86)/Stardock/etc) to check whether it works from there ?

If it runs from the default location then it is a problem with the installation path, the other alternative from what you've posted is some issue with IconPacker's configuration with Windows (hence the sxs error).

Okay I have an update:

To Stardock:

I think there are some problems with Impulse's installer for vista x64. In particular I think Impulse isn't handling the permission and file ownership properly, thus causing installation of some programs to not to be complete.

In this case Iconpackager and some other programs doesn't work after they are installed. I have installed Iconpackager using SDC instead of Impulse this time, and IT WORKED!

So to anyone that has problems getting the latest IP working in vista x64 try to update it using SDC instead of Impulse!
