Making Peace with the Dreadlords in sandbox mode

I'm embarrassed to admit this but I don't know how to make peace with the Dreadlords. I've been playing GalCiv II for a good while now...and I'm missing something.
The AI races seem to make peace with them relatively quickly which spares their trading lines and lets them build up their military. Meanwhile my shipping lanes are wiped out and my fledgling military usually doesn't get off the planets I'm building it on.
I play as a focused diplomat with the humans so if I can just get them to talk with me I'm sure I can work something out.

Any suggestions?

You cant. The only was to get rid of them is to exterminate them. If they apeared as a mega event, find their planet and invade ASAP, while they don't have any ships.

That's a bug, actually. No one is supposed to be able to negotiate with the Dread Lords.
ObjectDock - Access shortcuts and frequently used applications from an animated dock.

They make peace with you and only I believe if your military is powerful enough.

Thanks folks. Heh, that's the problem of focusing so much on my diplomacy, influence and such. My people just aren't warlike enough.
I do appreciate the advice, next time I'll try to take them out before they get so well established. In my last game the buggers overran several of my planets and wiped out most of my space going vessels, most in dry dock.

I camped a Huge Dreadnaught on thier doorstep and picked off thier ships one by one untill I could build a Super Invader Transport ship.... Peace was not an option.

It has happened to me once on a high difficulty game. A news alert said that a minor race had made peace with the DLs. So I click the alert and it brought me to the DL diplomacy screen (never saw it before). No pic, just the race flag. Felt like talking to the devil for some reason, but I managed to buy a peace treaty with them. Didnt geive me any problems the rest of the game. The only thing is they think all space is their territory, so they kept yellin at me to get my ships outta their sky when I was across the map.
