But I have a question/request...

Would it be possible to change smaller ships into "mecha" type things? Like the Mobile Suits in Gundam, and such. Add in a "Blade" weapon type and "Physical Shield" defense type, small ships are mechs, larger ones are battleships, a few mecha-inspired buildings, etc.

It MIGHT(Keyword) be possible to make a ship RESEMBLE a Mecha, if your TALENTED at making ships, but I doubt you can have it function like one.
