War, Peace, War, Peace

I've been playing a game today where I started stuck in a corner of the board. I had to attack the Terrans both for space and for technology.

They offered me a peace treaty and I took it, then shortly attacked them again.

The Yor, Torian and Drengin proceeded to declare war on me in short order. Not so wierd, except that every so often they will offer peace - I accept as I'm now barely progressing - and then the very same turn, they declare war on me as I'm engaged in an unjust war against the Terrans. This keeps happening as the Terrans refuse any attempt at peace assuming (now incorrectly) that I will just attack again. I wish they would make up their minds...

Finally, I give up, I offer the Terrans half my planets (including some good ones) and finally we are at peace. The following turn I make peace with the other races too at a serious cost to myself, and what happens the same turn?

"We are going to war with you since you are at war with our friends the Terrans."

Anyone else having this sort of thing happen? Is there any way I can get forgiveness?

Not that I've seen. When someone acts like a warmonger (you get that status if you're the agressor in two wars, IIRC), the AIs figure out real quick that they need to get rid of that player if they have any hope of surviving themselves.

While the message the others gave you after you made peace with the Terrans is a bit off, you're likely just still tagged with a warmonger penalty in foreign relations.

And, if you wanna go to war without that penalty, provoke them with influence star bases. That way, they are the agressors.

Ah, cute.

That would explain the death warrant the Thalans have for the Yor in my current game. They did the very same thing. Made peace with the Yor, told me about how bad the Yor where and then re-declared war on them in the same turn. Pretty funny since I bribe the Thalans to start the war in the first place. I don't think the Yor started either of their current two conflicts, but maybe just having two wars going does it? My spreading bribes around to start wars has apparently given them a death sentence...And hear I just wanted everyone else too busy to bother me.

I would also add blockaiding their trade (diplo screen) and threatening them as good things to do if you want them to start the war.

I went back to the save before I tried making peace with the Terrans and carried on - eventually they succumbed, but most people still hate me.

The really odd thing is that half the time, they were so desperate for peace with me they would accept paying me 100's of credits for a peace treaty, and then declare war again. Not particularly realistic behaviour and certainly not what I'd come to expect from GalCiv's AI which has until recently behaved like a human opponent in most cases.

Once I had finished with the Terrans, the Drengin continued to fight with me, and the Iconians twice gave me ships 'to assist in my noble battle with the Drengin', then declared war on my for my 'unjust war with...' you've guessed it, '... the Drengin'.

The Iconians are now going the way of the Terrans, though I've paid the Korath and the Krynn to hurry it up a bit this time

Next game I might try these suggestions for inciting war.
