Object Dock not loading correctly

Hi,

a strange thing is happening here:

OD is not loading correctly, only a small bar (with no docklets displayed) appears. I have to laod a (old) theme first.

Even though I saved my last used theme this one won't open, I have to choose an old saved theme and customize that one again.

I didn't install or removed any new progs.

I hope I could make it clear, since my english isn't the best.

Any help?

TY

have you cleared the cache?

my internet cache? sorry I can't imagine why this should influence the OD, I did anyhow, but nothing happened, even reinstalling didn't make any change.

If at least my last used (and saved) theme would open, but even that doesn't work.

He meant the OD cache. There is a tutorial HERE

Which version are you using?

Make sure that you have saved your backgrounds & images to the My Documents ObjectDock Folders

If that does not work I would suggest that you uninstall again...Reboot...use a registry cleaner...CCleaner is a good free one. ALWAYS make sure that you let the program make a backup so that you can easily restore your computer if you end up having any problems.
Download StarDock Central HERE
and install Object Dock ( OD ) through Stardock Central ( SDC )...you will find it listed under Misc....and reboot after installing.

Before reinstalling or even editing my registry (normally I wouldn't do that) I tried clearing the cache, but I don't even have a Stardock folder in the path described in the tutorial (Documents and Settings->Application Data), I only have a "ObjectDock Library" in "My documents", which is including Backgrounds, Images, Misc, Permissions, Special Images and Unsorted Downloads folders and 3 OD icons, is that the right one? I don't think so.

I don't want to install any new progs or edit my reg actually, is there any other help?

and why would only the default theme and my first saved theme open? after opening that one I made some modifications and saved the new one with a new name, when trying to load it, only this small bar with no docklets appear again, why can't the new theme be saved?

Edit: can the SDC download manager be deleted completely after having installed OD through it?

That would be because you installed OD via the e-mail link you received. By installing via SDC you will have a cache folder I did the same as you...had installed via the e-mail link....chose to uninstall & install via SDC...allows a cache that may well be causing your problems...When you have been changing settings or images ect ...a build up saved files can cause problems....not a technical explanation by any means but gets to the meat of the issue

The same thing when you have been installing & reinstalling programs...registry changes occur and left over entries can cause issues with new program installs. It is a good practice to clean the registry each time you uninstall any program. I have been doing this for years and do not have issues with programs.

Edit: can the SDC download manager be deleted completely after having installed OD through it?

SDC is not just a download manager...it allows you to completely & cleanly uninstall any Stardock programs. You will need SDC to uninstall OD if you installed it that way. As well as allowing easy access to the Galleries & the website. It also allows you to easily know when any updates are available on any of the purchased software.

SDC has many settings available that make keeping updated easy & secure. You will also find under setting the option to show pre-release or beta versions of programs...there is a major beta of OD right now that I am using and there are major improvements and awesome additions to the program. SDC uses no resources unless you choose to keep the setting found under auto update...to check every hour for updates. Otherwise the program uses nothing until you open it. Go to tools then settings to change this.

And finally yes it can be completely uninstalled but I have yet to find a reason to do so. And would not have had the pleasure of using the newest OD beta right now if I had.

And this is a link to a post about the improvements to OD in the 1.6 beta 1.59b

*** You will find OD listed under Misc in SDC

Another advantage to using SDC is archiving your programs that you have purchased. This avoids you constantly downloading them if you need to reinstall for any reason.

This will take a few minutes to load because it is graphics intense

reinstalling over SDC didn't make any change, I even loaded my registry backups, everything used to work fine before, I defintely didn't install any new progs for a while and suddenly I have to install SDC to reinstall SD?

Sorry, this really su...

I highly appreciate your efforts but none of your advices works for me, so I guess I have to use the only theme that was working, refine it, everytime I boot my PC (very frustrating) or completely get rid of OD.

SDC makes no sense to me, since I only use OD (and that won't change for a while), I don't have any use for it.

By installing via SDC you will have a cache folder

No, I did not

I am sorry that none of that worked The developer of OD frequents these forums & hopefully he will be able to help you.

If you have not received help in this thread within a day or 2 then I would suggest e-mailing support@stardock.com. This is mainly a user based support forum. But you definitively should not be having the problems that you do.

Just to give more info for anyone else who comes along & may be able to help
Post your OS & computer info.

Well, again, thank you very much for any of your efforts, I know, I have to wait much longer sometimes before anybody replies.

I use win xp pro, sp 2, what info do you need exactly?

Really strange, I absolutely didn't change anything on my system and suddenly this problem appears

aman2812: I think v1.9 which is coming out very soon will be able to help you. (It is the one that has been beta'd as v1.58/v1.59 on stardock central for the last couple weeks.)

I've seen situations like this but very rarly. I've seen it when it comes to messed up security permissions on the settings folder. I've got something for you to try though. Once you get the new version, you'll see on the main screen a new "Troubleshooting Options" button/dialog. Open that up, and you'll see an option near the bottom to open up your settings folder. Now what I'll want you to do, is first backup whats in there to somewhere else, and also perhaps use the option in the themes dialog to save a local backup of your current theme (which I think you're doing now anyways)... then in ObjectDock's settings folder I actually want you to delete the entire folder.

So, first click that button to open up your settings folder. Next, exit ObjectDock. Third, go up one level in the folder browser there... so that you can see the "ObjectDockPlus" folder. Delete that folder. This will clear all your settings. Open ObjectDock back up, load your saved theme, close it down, and you should see the folder recreate itself with new files. Hopefully this works out for you, let me know if it doesn't or if you don't understand one/any of the steps. Good luck, I hope you're back up and running soon!

JMBdev, thank you very much for this info, I will wait for the new version and follow your advices.

In the maentime everything is going well again, maybe this has been a system problem and not one especially with OD, I rolled back a backup of my registry and that was ist!
