For a Future version of Galciv

New game, not expansion

Expanding on the concept of Galactic Civilizations, is the idea of Intergalactic Civilizations. You start off in your Home Galaxy and eventually expand to other galaxies. This would require a map of the galaxies (standard galaxy pics would do, and maps generated for each galaxy, though not loaded in memory, until you are in that galaxy, and only when the player is currently working in that galaxy.

Each galaxy has its own races, with abilities, agendas, etcetera. In the Lensmen series of books by E. E. "Doc" Smith, Ph.D., only 2 galaxies were used. Civilization was home based in the First Galaxy (this one), and Boskone was home based in the Second Galaxy (aka Lundmark's Nebula). I only bring this up to illustrate the concept.

This game may be required to be done for 64 bit Windows (post Vista will be 64 bit only).

You may encounters races from other galaxies in your home galaxy, and not always know they are not from your home galaxy.

Of course, there are many details to be worked out, and this would not be seen for some years. However, I think it is worthy of consideration for future developement.

All ideas are welcome, and this would be for Stardock to develop.

Bastardising my previous post on this issue

There's a few open threads on this topic. ie, please search. Top right, you can't miss it.
If you're lacking in a word like expansion for your search, then I suggest you look in this thread

Note. This quote is highly inaccurate and not for public consumption

This is not for an expansion, but for a future game, as computing power permits it to be implemented.

This would be one heck of a game for sure, but it will need one heck of a computer to run it as well

It may require 4 or 8 cores. Depends on how the concept is implemented.

You begin the game in your Home Galaxy, and do not have access to others, until you become:

1: Aware of life in another galaxy
and/or
2: Have the required Techs to travel Intergalactic

Then you have access to a second galaxy. When in 2 or more galaxies, the player has to switch between them, since you can only do things in 1 galaxy at a time, as in getting things set for the next turn. Once all that is done, then click the turn button.

I think it's appropriate to open a thread to discuss a single idea for a future game or expansion, regardless of what you may call it. The thread you referenced points to a catch all thread that lists any and all things suggested for an expansion. This is fine in itself but each individual idea is easily lost in the six pages of replies and counting.

Actually, I've thought that this would be the best way to introduce multiplayer (boo, hiss) if it ever comes to fruition.

Two players could basically play their single player game, develop their base and pretty much eliminate the AI's in their own galaxy and then research the very expensive tech of intergalactic travel. From that point it would be pretty much one gigantic battle to determine supremacy. I think the end result would be over pretty quick. This basically has the benefits of both worlds. Play is predominately against the AI so your not always waiting for the other guy and then a short and sweet cataclysmic battle at the end to determine the better player.

Thank you for your input, Mumblefratz. I am only providing a Concept, in which most of the details would have to worked out by the Dev Team. presuming it gets that far.

It does not need to be limited to 2 galaxies, and this is where I think 64 bit enters the picture (RAM).

The other galaxies don't have to be the same size as the player's home galaxy.

Intergalactic opens up a very large number of possibilities.

Very nice idea! But i think you could imagine the same concept in a single galaxy, having each quadrant of it developing for itself along the first years until the discovery of hyperwarp or similar technologies. You could have, like in star trek universe, very different races, resources, behaviours etc... I think, actually, galciv2 misses a bit of epic, it's more a rush for colonization, technologies, wars than a slow march toward knowledge, invention and conquest. Anyway more depth in the devolepment of galaxies or quadrants would be welcome. It would mean you really need allies, you really need to search for particular technologies to confront the others, you couldn't end up every game as an omniscent and extrapowerful race. Maybe you don't even need a too much powerful computer to do so, if you adopt a system similar to simcity4.
