Upgrade Asteroid Mining, How do you upgrade?

So first off I love everything the devs have done with DA (except spying which I don't think has really changed much) but I am confused on one part. How do I upgrade the asteroid mines. I reserached the next level of space mining and thought it would upgrade automatically. No such luck. Do I have to use my mining ship to do it? If so how do I do it with the mining ship? Please help I am lost. I also saw the asteroids had numbers(an amount?) before I started mining them. Does that mean they run out?

On a side note, what do you guys set your asteroid abundancy for. I have mine on common and it seems I there is only enough of them to devote a cluster (3-4) to about 1/5 of my planets. It doesn't seem to significantly impact my production beyond early game but maybe that is because I have not upgraded them yet. Do they really make a difference in the game?

Ehhhh...when you initially send your miner to an asteroid to mine you will see above it will say "upgrade 5 weeks " or something . So after 5 turns send it to the next asteroid. In about 20 weeks you should have basic mining bases . So what you do is you send your miner back to the first asteroid and it will upgrade to the next level . Or actually you could send it back to the first asteroid after 10 weeks and it will upgrade . I think the problem you are having is that you are trying to get the miner to stay at an asteroid and upgrade and it wont do it until you have upgraded another asteroid first .

Also it helps to have an influence star base near your asteroid field so they don't start beaming there resources somewhere else . After you have a few upgrades those mining bases become very useful !

After you get the tech for better mining you send your miner to the mine just like when you first built it.

If you set a miner to automate it should take care of it all for you. If you have say two asteroid fields, it'll flit back and forth building and upgrading. This takes a long time so by the time it's done you usually have the next space mining tech.
Though if not you can always park it nearby and automate it again later. Saves a lot of hassle.

Yes, you do. Simply send your ship to the asteroid you want to mine, and it will do the rest. When it is finished, it will just sit there, so you'll have to send it to the next one yourself. An easier way to do this is to double-click to highlight the ship and give it the 'automate' command. It will upgrade the asteroid you choose, and when finished, move to the next in line. When you research the next level of tech, it will go through the process again. Be mindful, though. When the ship has finished up to the current level of tech in a particular field, it will take off across the galaxy to the next closest field and start the process again, unless you de-activate the auto command. You can use multiple ships in a field if you are in a particular hurry. When the field is completely built up, the ship becomes redundant, and you can upgrade it to a constructor, and send it off to wherever you need it.
Does that mean they run out?

Not at all. You can milk that cow forever, and they cost you nothing to maintain. Free resources. Did you know that you can choose where to send the resources? By default they will be sent to your nearest planet, but you can direct them to another planet in the system, or even to one in another system entirely- but keep in mind, that the farther away you beam them, the less will actually get there. You can also direct multiple fields at a single planet, for an extra large boost. Hope this has cleared things up for you. Good gaming.

Thanks for the tips guys. I knew you can choose where to send them. The tip about setting the miner to automate should do the trick for me.

Thanks all.

I've always thought having to re-send the miner is stupid. I don't understand why the mining site can't just upgrade itself. Unless you assume it's automated with no people I guess. But still, that's usually the first thing to be decomissioned, so I almost always have to build another one to upgrade later on. Annoying.

With what, twigs and stones? Presumably the mining ship has enough cargo left in it's hold to bring the base up to the next level; and the one after that.
