Pirates- A Helping Hand

Yep, they came, must've been a hundred fleets on my meager medium-sized map. By their fifth turn every ship and starbase was gone, and I had managed to kill only two pirate fleets with my now gone military. Being a rather distant third behind the all-powerful Thalans and Altarians, I saw it as a chance to level the playing field.

But why stop there? After a few of my best ships were eaten up instantly, I realized that I could not fight the pirates- and I didn't need to. With literally dozens of pirate fleets "protecting" my borders and other militaries crushed, I needed not worry about building ships- at all. So while the AI builds ship after ship to get instantly vaporized, I build Terraforming and Industrial Sectors with military spending on 0%, building up my planets for when the pirates finally die down.

So when the pirates come and no one can beat them, just think about it- you don't have to! They are all the protection you'll need for a while.

I had a similiar situation, but I lucked into it (sort of). I was playing a gigantic map with all civs involved at a normal game intelligence. I was doing well when the galaxy got to vote on who gets the prisoner base. Experience had told me that at some point it always goes south and creates a situation similiar to pirates.

Not wanting to deal with it I voted it to the Torians who at the time was the only civ that was friendly to me. They also were the only ones that were close to me in reaserch and economy and I didn't want them getting out of control and I knew that the end result would cause them some problems.

Well, long story longer, The Torians had a revolt and vowed to make me pay for whatever, they had amassed huge fleets that were trying to decimate my space stations around their world. the stations only had fortifications I and were doomed until in week two of the revolt their penal colony failed and generated a pirtated fleet that held out to wave after wave of Torian ships. It was hilarious. The Torians attack on me never left the area around their own homeworlds.
