(Newbie) Pirate Behavior/Countermeasures?

I'm playing my first game, and had pirates show up for the first time.

It's still fairly early on (I just got access to Medium hulls), and the pirate fleet showed up right next to a setup I have around one of my better planets, with a Military Starbase, an Influencer (which, oops, I forgot to put a defense module on), and lots of asteroids.

It doesn't *look* like it should be an insurmountable challenge (one medium-sized Pirate, one fighter, but it is.) The frigate has Stinger IV missiles (which I have) for a 4 attack, but an anti-missile defense of 7, which makes it nearly impossible to even dent, let alone destroy.

I've tried every short-term thing I can think of (like hasty upgrades of my flagship and local fighters, stripping them of everything but weapons and defense, and/or swapping Stingers for Lasers, unfortunately my best non-Missile weapon.)

Every tactic I use to destroy the frigate fails, and it ends up destroying my starbases.

What I'm wondering is:
1. Is there any way to win a battle in the short term?
2. How do pirates act, in general? After they blow up my starbases, are they just going to keep targeting me, as the human player and/or leader, mercilessly until they blow up everything I own, or is it possible they'll wander off to bother some other empire?

If you've already got comparable technology to theirs, just grab a couple levels of miniturization tech, or research up to the next type of weapons. That should give you the edge you need to design pirate-killer ships.

Will pirates attack mining outposts? If they don't, maybe I can limit the damage somewhat until I find something that can destroy them.

Also, when a pirate event occurs, is there just the one fleet created? Or could there more roaming around that I haven't spotted? Or will there be an unending stream of them from now on?

That depends on if you got the mega event version or the regular version. If you've only seen one so far, then it's most likely the latter.

Yeah, I suspect it's the regular version. Can't remember the event text exactly, but it wasn't overly alarming-sounding.

Assuming it is the regular event, does that mean there's only the one fleet?

It might be, but there might also be a couple others floating about somewhere. No way to tell until you run into them, really.

Ah. No great matter, I suppose, since once I'm able to take on one of them, the others should be equally defeatable....

The best advice I've seen is to not build anything for awhile and just turn up your research until you have a ship configuration that will take them on. In your case, I'd research the Laser line until I had strong enough beam weapons to tackle them. You just need something to get around their current defences.

Oh, never mind. I was assuming that it was the mega event Pirates. Still, just turn up your research a bit and find a counter-weapon to their defences.
