Are people listening to extreme music brighter than common people?

Are people listening to extreme music brighter than common people?

I came across this article on blabbermouth.net, and I appear to be part of the top 5 percent of the nation's gifted and talented youngsters, even though I'm not from this nation, and I'm not a youngster (more like a padawan in his glorious 30s).

Does this mean 95% of the rest of the world should bow to our superior intellect? I tend to believe so, but I'd like your opinion nonetheless...

I was a genius and I didn't know it! Thanks to 20+ years of listening to Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Emperor, Dying Fetus and others...

ARTICLE:

Jonathan Brown of U.K.'s The Independent reports:

Heavy metal has long been saddled with a reputation for attracting admirers more interested in decibels than Descartes. New research, however, promises to rescue the genre from the mosh pit of intellectual obscurity.

A study has revealed that death metal and thrash bands such as SLAYER and SLIPKNOT produce the music of choice for today's brightest youngsters.

A survey which was carried out among students at the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth, a cohort drawn from the top 5 per cent of the nation's youngsters, drew praise for metal's "visceral brutality" with more than a third rating it among their favourite styles. Researchers admitted they were surprised to find that "intelligent" genres traditionally associated with the precociously bright, such as classical and jazz, were the least popular.

What they discovered instead was that youngsters liked to let off steam to hardcore sounds, particularly if it had an emotionally charged or overtly political message behind it. One respondent said: "You can't really jump your anger into the floor and listen to music at the same time with other types of music."

Stuart Cadwallader of the University of Warwick, which conducted the survey, said heavy metal was found to provide a form of "catharsis", particularly for those with low self-esteem.

They found the aggressive music a useful conduit for their frustrations and anger, according to the findings revealed at the British Psychological Society conference in York yesterday.

Mr. Cadwallader said this intellectual elite often found themselves facing situations and issues not encountered by less able students.

"Perhaps the pressure associated with being gifted and talented can be temporarily forgotten with the aid of music," he said.

Well, I don't know if you've listened to really extreme stuff like XXXManiacs or other bands I don't even dare to write the name here, but they do sometimes lack the respect women deserve, to put it cleanly...

while there are a few exceptions to every rule .. the majority of the music ive heard from heavy metal groups are mild in comparison to the majority of rap...

I see it like this

metal= rage against the machine and rebel, occasionally tainted for shock value with obcene language and lewd implcations....

Todays RAP= constant barrage of obcenities, wrapped in hate mongering, with extra abuse toward others heaped on top, all washed down with a stolen 40...with an occasional half attempted love ballad that typically reverts to beatin a ho for dissin the singer...

the rise in viloence and domestic abuse coencides with the rise in violent music our kids are being exposed to.

I will add, not all rap stars are abusive thungs profitering on demoralizing our youth...will smith is the first to pop into mind...

I'm laughing out loud at that one! Excellent!

That is so true.

Oh, and seeing your langage, are you from the 'hood?

I think that most Metal bands use extreme langage for shock value, because it sounds fun (weird, but fun if you can distance yourself from the actual thing being depicted in the song).
Of course there are a few bands that take it seriously, especially some black metal bands, but for the rest...
And you have Grind core and Gore, which are a good listen if you are studying medecine and chirurgy (Carcass comes to mind).

born in whittier, lived in compton got wise, got an education and ran like H3ll away from the gang scene..

most metal/rock/grunge use occasional extreme language and implications for shock value...

main stream RAP seems to have built its very foundation on theft, drug abuse, demoralization of women, breaking the law and killing everybody...in the rap culture these are the norm propigated by singers showing mass bling, fine rides, hot chicks... all of which go to their multi million$$ homes behind iron gates and relax while their security team keeps the very people they bank on out. does anybody really think they are concerned with the kids who actually buy in to the thug life they sell for $20 a CD?....

Morris Minor and the Majors puts Rap in its place....

I always thought "get more ass than a toilet seat" summed up Rap well.  Some of the tunes are quite catchy, provided you ignore the inane lyrics...though I feel my clothes fit me too well to be a real rap-fan and I know which way round a cap's peak goes.....

Punk is the same....I can handle a bunch of razor blades and safety pins without inadvertently pearcing my face with them so I won't 'cut it' [pun] as a punk.....

The term 'heavy metal' was coined by a DJ introducing a Led Zeppelin song.  Wiki might have its genesis at "1969 to 1974" but even Floyd was already around in '65...

Until the last year or two my hair was long enough to 'head-bang' without looking like a Noddy Dog in the back window of a car....and I like leather....so 'heavy' it is, for me....

does Paul Anka count as heavy metal?
or did I get confused, maybe they placed a pin in his hip which was made of some sort of heavy metal alloy?

When I was younger my dad assured me that when I grew up and matured I would listen to Country (instead of Metal).

Guess I never grew up or matured. At 40 I still listen to it all the time. So instead of arguing about music with my kids about music tastes, like my dad and I did, my boys and I crank up the metal together!

On Fridays when I need to get everything wrapped up for the week, I like to crank up some Korn. It clears everyone out, I get my paperwork finished, and I leave in a great mood! Our Sr. Network Administrator likes to program to Metallica. Says it puts him in his zone.

**Note that with both sons playing string instruments in orchestras (bass and cello) we love the Metallica S&M album and Apocolyptica. Both boys like playing classical, but generally don't enjoy listening to it.

To be fair, most of the metalheads in there 30s and more don't have long hair anymore, some don't have any hair left all together (I'm fine, thank you, I still have something, but it's short).

Long hair doesn't mean metal, I mean look at Allan Greenspan, nothing left on the top, but I saw him last month at a Hate Eternal concert stage diving to his heart content.

A funny quote from Mahavishnu_Mouzon at blabbermouth forum:

"Slipknot is very intellectually stimulating. Whenever someone plays them i put in earplugs and read a book."

Otherwise, one of my favorite DM song would be "Hammer smashed face" from Cannibal, even though I prefer George Fisher as singer.
what about you?

My tops would have to be Cast Down the Heretic from Nile, I also liked Sanded Faceless from Cannibal, polyps from Cattle Decapitation, and Strangled With A Halo from Pig Destroyer.

on other fronts, i get into some lighter stuff, like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, rise Against, Seether, and Slipknot.

The world is or will be full of wealthy and powerful metalheads?

have you ever seen Metalocalypse?

I wish I still had hair that I could grow long enough to "head bang"

My neck is still screwed up from that lamb of god concert...i got the tar literally kicked outta me..

Cast Down the Heretic, great choice! Well, obviously, it's Nile, you can't go wrong with that!
