Can I purchase the game this way....?

I have bought and loved the Galac Civ II game and now I'm wanting to buy the Dark Avatar expansion.
I live in the UK and wondered because I know someone who has bought this already from you could I make a copy of his discs and then purchase it from you via the Digital Download which, I assume, would provide me with my own license key for updates / registration etc etc etc....?
That way it would save me such a big download and yet allow me to have paid for this release.
I don't wish to even ask if I could make a copy of his discs without making sure what I want to do is ok in terms of the licensing agreements etc. I certainly would not even want to try the game out without buying it first, I already know what the quality will be from buying the retail version of Galactic Civ II
I just don't want to have to make such a big download if I could avoid it..?
The only thing that will bother me is that my lovely tin edition will be accompanied by a plain burned CDR
