Problems With UI and Sound - UI Black and No Active Devices

Problems With UI and Sound - UI Black and No Active Devices

Yes I read the thread at the top, but my problem is a little different.

I have a purchased copy of windows blinds. And yesterday my program went stupid and the UI started to go black, and I would have to reset it back every time I started my computer. It's a paint in the but

Let me remind you I DO have a purchased copy

I noticed another thing yesterday to, when I went to change my volume...the audio mixer...I get an error saying "No Active Mixer Devices Available" I didn't think these two were related, but I can't hear sound when i'm on myspace or watching youtube..ect...my Itunes sound still works however

I did however find out the two were related. When I start up my computer, I can open my audio mixer no problem adjust olume, hear sound on youtube, myspace ect. But then when my UI turns black, I get the "No Active Mixer" error

So I uninstalled it because It was pissing me off so much

but the freakin thing is still doing it, my UI is crashing, from the standard XP blue to the gray block one via Windows 98...and my sound is still giving me the same problems.

There is no doubt these things are related and windows blinds is the reason for them, but I don't understand why I still get this problem even after unintalling it.

Windows XP
Using the current Windows Blinds Version
Dell Dimension 8300
Sound Blaster Live!
Ati Radeon

please help, i really don't want to reformat my computer

i'm afraid to restart my computer again, who knows what will happen

can you delete them?
do you have a registry cleaner? CCleaner will clean some out (and will make a back up copy just in case) - it's free

well crap

maybe by scrolling down and starting where they first started you might be able to figure out what starting causing it.

me, i'd seriously consider starting backup copies with a reformat in mind

If you have uninstalled WB and you are still having problems then it is likely WB is not to blame for your problems and WB breaking is a symptom of some other problem in the same way the Active Mixer error message is.

I would look in taskmanager for an application using a lot of system resources (you will have to turn on showing GDI & USER resources when on the processes tab)

Bichur: The standalone WB installer files are not quite identical to the SDC installer.

it seems like it was the problem though, because I began to have problems similar to the post at the very top of this forum. The UI would turn black and the painting would be slow

but this really shouldn't happen with a purrchased copy, and I DO have a purchaed copy

here is what my event viewer has

The icons in your event viewer toolbar are customized.
Did you use any XPize pack? Those XP-ization packs change system files and you will NEED to revert the changes just in case it changed something important.

I had xprize but got rid of it about a year ago because I didn't really need it

You are not suffering from the problems caused by a cracked copy.  For a start that can only impact WB 5.0 and not later versions and only when a crack has been installed.

The WB skin turning black is a symptom, not the cause of your problem.  The fact that you continue to have problems after removing WB shows this.

ok then, thanks for replying

know of any possible reasons why this would be happening

When my explorer started all it's crashing and what not, I think it was related to trying to update Norton 2003 to 2005 previously (5 days install/uninstall = never took - broke my BITS - didn't find out for months my windows updates had failed (yeah, Yrag... I know.. updates not the only thing failed   ) - had to download SP2 on dialup (33+ hrs) - couple of months later, started getting the crashes - was in the process of making backups - was doing click, shift click to highligh skins then get properties to get size when my mouse double clicked and well over 60 WB skins tried to apply at once.

have you looked back at the beginnings of the event viewer to see approx when it started and with what?

I am not alone !!

sorry, forgot myself.

did you try opening task mangager (ctrl+alt+del usually), then
click the processes tab
then click 'view' - 'select columns' and put a check mark in 'user object' & 'gdi objects' (i think that's what Neil mentions in #38)
then click on the 'name' "user object" or "gdi object" and the column will line up from high use to low use or vice versa {clicking it is a toggle, if the first click shows all 0s then click again)

done ok System Idle Proicess is 99
and taskmanager, iepxplore, csrss.exe tptate frp, 01 to 00
the rest are 00

What do they say??????

Let's try this again..... open the errors and read what the errors say. They should all be duplicates, so you only need one under the same error heading to tell you what the others are .

Namely: Userenv, Application Error and Perfnet. Also open MsInstaller and see what it tried to install.

alright i think I may have found something

i was viewing my system process, roughly guessing what time my sound gets all screwed...by constantly opening the program until i get an error

about the time is a process called dumprep.exe and did some google research and came across this

http://spam.weblogsinc.com/2005/03/18/dumprep-exe-discoveries-is-it-spyware/

that might be the cause of my sound

as for my UI crashing..what it does now is crash then go back to normal, so fast that it is really hard for me to tell in the process window what is causing it
