I logged into the Metaverse (finally) and I noticed that the gameplay is the same as Single Player

Why is This?

Is there an Actual Server that the makers host (for example) a server like Activision done for SFC3?

The metaverse is not multiplayer; it is essentially a high score list (with lots of extra features). You post your game scores and compete against others based on cumulative score.
