Object Desktop Network

Need to polish up the programs and website

Wanted to post a bit about my experience as a new user of various Stardock apps, including the Object Desktop 2007 Network, some freebies from Stardock/wincustomize, and Cursor XP Plus.

1) Bootskin BSOD. Yes, I realize it's not supported. It's still broken and deserves to be fixed or removed from the site. Part of the issue/complication may be that there are at least four versions available. 1.0, 1.02, 1.03, 1.05/b 1.09. I've read that the 1.09 version may actually work, but since it either a) doesn't exist, or b) was never released outside of beta is no longer available to new/current subscribers, I'll never know.

2) Website and newsgroup posts in the Stardock Central app. Why does EVERY SINGLE PAGE have to have a java script run urchin tracker? At least try to make it so that if a user has scripting disabled/off (rightfully so) you don't get an error on every page hit. Makes the site/forum experience suck unless you give up on security/privacy.

3) Cursor XP. Or is it Cursor XP plus? I paid for something. But I'll be damned if I can register it. There's apparently some special/unique thing that I have to do with this one single Stardock app in order to successfully register it.

4) Windows system File Protection alert. I never figured out which Stardock app hooked into a protected file/.dll, but one did try. Why? I see stuff like that and the first thing that comes to mind is 'auto-dialer'. When I'm not running Stardock Central, do any Stardock apps phone home? If so, what information is transferred?

5) Run as .dll rundll32 application faults. Often. God help me if I want to apply a new suite or DesktopX skin set. I like to think I'm pretty well in tune with how to setup a nice stable XP system. I really get ticked off when I run across the exceptional app that spits out an exception every time I try to do anything with it. Do Stardock devs get the MS application exception reports? You've got about 20 of them just from my system in the past 2 or 3 days. I'd like to think that there's enough data to fix the problem.

6) Programs menu spaghetti. Ok, so there's an option to have the installers from each applet prompt for both directory and program menu location. This is good, because the default installs will leave with 3 or 4 links to cursor XP, 20 or 30 links to website URLs that you can get to from within Stardock Central - and they're all a bit redundant since the info for the couple of dozen applets are actually also found all on one single url/page of the stardock site. But the real kicker is that so few of the applets can find their way into one Stardock subfolder on the file system or program menu. I mean I've got stardock crap all over the place now. So I uninstalled everything... which you have to do one at a time duh... and reinstalled. I made sure to tell it that I wanted the shortcuts on the Programs menu to be just on my user account and not on the All User profile. I made sure to tell it that I wanted the shortcuts all to go under the Start | All Programs | Stardock folder.

It did nothing of the kind, and shortcuts were put into the All Users profile AS WELL AS MY OWN... and again I've get more Cursor XP links (among others) than any sane person needs/wants. Doesn't look like any of them are for Cursor XP Plus though, I can't really tell.

Taken as a whole, I'm left with the impression that this is really a bit of amateur work. Sorry if I'm being harsh in my assessment, but this is my New User Experience and I wanted to share with others.

To respond generally, Stardock makes great apps. They have very good support and developer interaction in the forums. In the past they have fallen behind on documentation and suite integration. Part of that is due to the fact that the apps are designed to be seperate purchases as well as part of a suite. It's harder to code for both and please everyone. I agree that more could be done.

Specifically:
1) Bootskin works for lots of people. Why should those people lose out because it doesn't work for some people. The one suggestion I would make is to modify either the installer or the first run dialog to post a warnign and instructions on how to recover if it fails.

2) Send an email to websupport@wincustomize.com with the URL and the error. They may not have been aware.

3) If you go to https://www.stardock.com/support/ and enter the email you used to purchase cxp+ it will send you a link to download teh plus version.

4) Do you have the SDCtray running? It's an optional install and run. It phones home to see if any apps have been updated.

5) Been running DX for years. No errors. If it happened to more people, it'd be all over the forums. Next time it happens email support@stardock.com or go to https://www.stardock.helpserve.com and report your problem there. You can also install SmartException (from SDC Free Stuff). It captures many of the Stardock app crashes and makes it easy to send good reports to SD.

6) Agreed.

As a long time user, I've grown used to the quirkiness of the site(s), apps, support, etc. But the value of the products and the people are worth far more than I've paid. Stardock has made working at my PC more peasent and productive.

I am very glad that you took the time to post here though. Sometimes we forget how confusing this all can be and how new users react. Thanks.

[And stick around . . the community here at wincustomize.com (or maybe you posted this at stardock.com) is filled with wonderful people that will be happy to help you get everything running like you want]

come on IRC so we can debate this in person

The Program folder shortcuts really are a mess... especially since everytime I update an application, it re-adds the shortcuts.  I organize mine manually, so to have these re-added everytime is annoying.  I think ZubaZ covered the other stuff.

for CursorXP

uinstall, reboot, open SDC, tool, register, click "Misc" on the left, use the drop down and find CursorXP - enter the serial for it then click 'register'

When you click "Misc" on the left on the main SDC, CursorXP ver 1.31.015 should show up under 'Purchased Software'.

Neither the start menu nor cursorxp config signify 'plus' == but -- if you click 'options' (above the apply button on the main tab) and get options such as shadow, transparency, color, bright/contr, size, pref === you're running the plus version

and yeah the menu thing can be irritating - i usually just delete the ones i don't want

You can also click the "About CursorXP" link in the configuration dialog.

The cursor XP thing is just one of the several issues mentioned. Point of fact, the registration key provided via email post-purchase returns a message indicating the key is not valid regardless of whether or not I install via Stardock Central or uninstall/reinstall from the link to the dl.stardock.com site given in the purchase confirmation email.

As for IRC debates... not much to debate. Program installation shouldn't be so 'wrong'.

Another example I didn't mention in my first post:
Take the cursor XP installer from the direct download link in the confirmation email. Run it. It will create subfolders within the directory you run the installer from. But those probably necessary subfolders that contain cursor themes, etc, will not be created within the directory you tell the installation program to install to. Just wow.

I'm going to delete everything and start over. Perhaps because I downloaded demo versions of some of these programs - and because the installer for the paid versions isn't very smart - there's a conflict.

If only there were a way to really uninstall everything...because uninstalling doesn't do that.

The zapper will do it: Post #12 WWW Link

Thanks for the link to the zapper. Coincidentally, I'll need to hack the galciv2 demo install as well, since I just this moment went to uninstall it from Stardock Central and - of course - it failed with an error. lol.

You can use the ODNT Zapper to competely uninstall everything so you can start over.

https://www.stardock.com/files/odnt_zapper.exe

That is the best way to go since you had previous installations of trial software.  I would next install Stardock Central from the link in your e-mail, and enter your registration info.  From there you should be able to install the programs with ease.
