Vista as Server causes Explorer.exe to crash

My current setup is Vista (RTM) as the server and WindowsXP sp2 as the client. The screens switch when a mouse to the left corner of the server it auto switches (no locking). Everything works great but after about an hour or so of use I my start menu stops responding and my taskbar stops responding. If I click on them enough explorer.exe will crash. If I just go into TaskManager and restart explorer.exe it also fixes the problem.

The issue seems intermittent and I'm unable to reliabley reproduce it at this time. I'm currently trying the locking of screens and clicking scroll lock to switch to see if that helps fix the issue. I'll post my results.

Note: When running WindowsXP as the server and Vista as the client I have had 0 problems.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Ironically I get the same results as well. My home system is Vista which serves as the server and my notebook from work is WinXP which is a client. I thought it might me due to the fact that Microsoft came out with new Intellipoint/Intellitype drivers for Vista. Are you using these drivers?

No, the version of Vista I'm running is the cd version with only MS required updates.

I am currently using Vista Ultimate RTM (6.0.6000 Build 6000)

I think I may have solved my issue. I had my keyboard and mouse going through a usb hub. I have switch them to connect directly to the usb ports on my Vista machine and I am able to switch back and forth now with no problem - knock on wood.

Good to know. Thanks for letting us all know Stan

I'm using Vista Version 6.0 (Build 6000). I am using the Microsoft Optical Desktop 5000 and still have not resolved this issue. I came back here to see if there have been any updates but apparently there have not. Is this issue being addressed? Is it even on the table to be addressed?

We've put together an Ultimate box with a wireless setup, but it's not taking out explorer. Still looking.

Hi. Did you ever work out what was wrong here? I am having the same problem - using Vista Home Premium on a home pc I find the taskbar frequently crashes and I have to use taskmanager to end explorer and then re-start it. All a bit of a pain - so please let me know if you found the solution!

please email me directly if you can - mconradiDELETETHIS@blueyonder.co.uk

thanks

No, this was never solved for me. I just recently upgraded my laptop to Vista as well and still have the problem about 2-3 times a day. Vista 32 Business is primary and Vista 32 Business secondary with the latest version of Mutliplicity (1.10) running on both.

FYI, wireless setup or not doesn't matter. It also happens intermittently over hours of use between the 2 machines. Only the server has explorer.exe crash.

Are there any updates with this bug?

Update: It's very easy to repro for me.
1. Setup the server as Vista and work in the client for a while (time is not sure, I just switched back after an hour).
2. After a period of time switch back and the start menu will not behave properly (e.g. Menu opens but you can't execute anything with a click).
3. Restart explorer.exe for everything to work in the server again.

I am also experiencing the same problem. If I spend too much time controlling the client machine my server machine will lock up. Cannot open the Start menu or use any Quick Launch shortcuts. I have to Cntl-Alt-Del to switch to Task Manager to kill explorer.exe. I then restart explorer.exe and all is fine -- until I happen to spend too much time exclusively on the client machine again. Very frustrating but I can live with it (although I'd rather not).

Here are my basic specs: Both machines running Vista Home Premium, both machines are HP Media Center PCs and I am using a Microsoft Wireless Comfort Keyboard with a Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 (using MS IntelliPoint version 6.10.157.0 and IntelliType 6.10.156.0). Nvidia GeForce 8600GT card using 7.15.11.5818 drivers. I am running Multiplicity Pro 1.10.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cleaned up

I'm having the same problem with Vista and Multiplicity Pro. I don't know if the problem is related to my hardware, but I also have a Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 6000 (Laser Mouse 5000, Laser Keyboard 6000, Dual Receiver) with the latest version of IntelliPoint, though I believe that explorer was crashing before I installed IP.

Explorer crashes (or hangs) constantly. Over the course of a day's work I probably end task/new task on explorer 20+ times. Sometimes after it hangs it's partially responsive, but the only way I've found to fix the problem entirely (though rather briefly) is to restart explorer.

So are there any intentions to fix this issue or are we just going to keep this thread "cleaned up"? I have been waiting since December....

I am experiencing what I believe to be a similar problem. When I leave my computers for a few hours with a lot of programs open on the server and come back the taskbar and most windows won't respond to any mouse clicks. I can alt-tab between them and the keyboard works but only a few applications respond to the mouse. I usually have to reboot the server to fix, but next time it happens I will have to try killing explorer and see if that brings it back. Extremely frustrating as this used to happen occasionally on my XP machine and now it is happing on my newly built Vista machine.

Just as an update, the new beta (1.20b[b].019) seems to have fixed this problem for me (finally).

I just installed and am testing this now. I really hope this fixes the issue because I like multiplicity a lot but have given up on it because of this.

explorer.exe just crashed.....

Same repro as before. Vista Business, latest patches as primary
Anything as secondary (XP or Vista does not matter)
