This website having problems

https://forums.galciv2.com/error.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/index.aspx

I tend to get this a lot when going between forums/links.
Also have a serious problem posting.

I'm guessing that this is a temporary situation as the forums are apparently receiving much needed work.

I was getting that error a few minutes ago. It also seems like there are a lot visitors logging on sometimes, I've seen it hit over 2000 at least once, and it makes me wonder how many of those are actual people and how many are bot spiders.

I'm pretty sure there are devs working on things fairly steadily. Either that or some random confluence of events has made lurking far easier for me in the last couple of days.

Usually, unless I was signed in, something aged quickly and I got errors any time I tried a forum link. Haven't seen that problem in the last day or so.

I may as well add this to this thread. This is the second time that I've seen this kind of thing. I went to the "Using 2 monitors" thread and this is what I saw.

When I click on the Anonymous user H's profile I was taken to my own profile. Very strange. I saw this exact behavior on another thread as well. When I exited and re-entered the thread I saw the 23 posts that were there all along. Kind of down the rabbit hole type of strange.

I had the same thing earlier today. Can't remember which thread did it, but it was at 12 replies. When I went in it was that same Anonomous H post your showing. Hit back and went right back in. It was fine then. Just one of those weird things.

I saw that Anonymous H thing around the time I made my earlier post in this thread. In the 'grammar nazi' thread, there's a post by 'Jennifer1 not logged in', where if you check the profile, you get taken to your own profile.

Maybe it's part of the new "scary" AI that Brad is developing. It starts out as an app on the forum servers, steals your personality, then uses it against you later when it insinuates itself into your game!

Kind of down the rabbit hole type of strange.

I'd been unable to login to either here or wincustomize for quite a while. It'd been over a month. Today I figured it out.

In the begining I could log into Galciv2, but I couldn't access the forums. I couldn't access Wincustomize.com at all if I tried to log in. More recently, I couldn't log into Galciv2 at all. The error message was different than the other sorry... pages, it was an actual error message. The message (.net debug code), indicated that it was having a problem with one of the characters in my password. Specifically, it was a ")" character. But I couldn't log in to change the password. Oh what a cruel mistress fate can be.

Today I tried Galciv1, and it worked. I changed my password and cleared my cookies for Wincustomize. And now, here I am. Logged in and posting. Whatever changes they are making to the back end of the pages do not seem to be being made to Galciv1 and for that I am gratefull.

I hope this helps somebody.

We must be of a similar age. Great choice of song. I think it was '65 but perhaps my memory fails me.

Too bad we are not as timeless, as classics such as that.

Anonymous users don't have a profile page, but apparently it was easier to forward you to your own rather than to an error page or remove the link

I'm not sure how Jennifer posted to that thread--AFAIK anon posting is only possilbe on JoeUser, and the GC2 OTF shouldn't be accessible from there.

The best thing about quoting that song here is that it was sung by Jefferson Starship!

I wasn't around when it was recorded, but I have a cool aunt who made sure I started off with the classics. Our ages aren't that similar on the surface (check this old thread), but I think we both fall into the gap between the baby boomers and genX, and our viewpoints on many of the topics posted around here seem to be very similar.

Before the post runs away from the original topic...

While we appreciate it very much when people let us know about problems with the forums, error reports like the one quoted above don't do very much to help us solve the various kinds of issues that people run accross. I'm not asking anyone to be a debugging pro  But more detail would definately be appreciated. Simply stating 'Also have a serious problem posting' could mean that your cat keeps jumping on the keyboard every time you go to hit the Enter key  Without certain things like a URL of the page you are having the problem on, a description of the error, or even a screenshot (like Mublefratz posted - it helped me fix that error this morning) it's very difficult to guess at what might be happening for you.

Please keep that in mind everyone. Thanks for reporting issues and I'll be keeping an eye on this post.

your cat keeps jumping on the keyboard

Just remember to wash your hands before using your keyboard after opening a can of tuna.

I really have no clue about how these sites work, but I do have to imagine that it must be pretty complex since folks can come into them from JoeUser.com, Stardock.com, GalCiv2.com. Heck, even Galciv1.com and who knows where else. Sometimes the errors are annoying, but being carted off to your own profile when clicking on an Anonymous user was actually funny.

Brilliant Jefferson Airplane/Alice in Wonderland reference.

Now... conspiracy theory time.

Gw's grammar Nazi thread seems to have disappeared. It's the _only_ page not working for me. Go here:WWW Link

Is it because everyone started talking about real Nazis?

Yeah, same thing for me. Maybe the devs got tired of reading our drivel.

Notice taken.
Just want to point out that the above link states that I do not have clearence to see what the problem is but that someone with admn rights are able to access the proper files.

I just saw that exact error myself. I almost took a screenshot of it, but then decided I didn't want to fool with it. It kind of reminds me of the 500 Internal Server Error that our anti-spam quarantine server gives when it is just simply too busy handling too many requests at one time to be able to respond in a timely fashion. You just try things a bit later after things calm down and some folks log out and then everything is fine. Sometimes, you can retry right away and it works again.

Of course, what I've seen may have nothing at all to do with what is going on here.

Many years ago when I worked in a tech support site, we actually had someone call in because every time he tried to put our product floppy in the drive his parrot took it from him. The tech support agent told him to put the parrot in the cage before putting the floppy in the drive...You must be smarter than the bird!!!

This tangent now ends

Possibly second biggest laugh I've gotten from this forum & likely evidence that the wee folk are truly among us, or at least in the software

On another tangent in this thread, in the late '90s I did phone support for a tiny software audience and I actually spoke with someone who honestly needed to be talked through opening the CD drive and inserting a disc (leading me to believe that the "it's a cupholder" myths are based in truth). This caller was obviously not an idiot and still serves as a reminder that you always need to check your assumptions about other folks' live experiences. I won't even start on the recently-revived "How old are you" thread...

What about the cans of worms that are so often opened around here?
