Selecting Space Miner ships when they are working

What am I missing?

I've tried stabbing around with the mouse, but cannot seem to get to a miner when it is working. I want to upgrade for speed while I'm thinking about it rather than having to remember to go check the boat after it finishes the current field.

Click on the asteroid field.  Press M (this will cancel the mining orders)
Then you will be able to upgrade the ship.

You cannot upgrade the mining ship while it is building or upgrading a mining base.

Does cancelling the mining order throw out progress to date, or will the miner pick up again where it left off?
