upgrading ships refused?

Hi
If i try to upgrade a ships weapons and engine, but i have no ships of that model in service... After i complete the upgrade and save the design, it automatically reverts back to the old crappy one?

However it will retain changes i make in the ship description!!

This is a pane in the ass, because i end up with sooo many ships and cannot change any of them, i just go to the saved games directory and delete them all when i get too many.

Are you running the latest version of the game? Even then, it's best to use a new name when you upgrade a ship design (you can then just obsolete/delete the old one if you don't want it).

yes i am

NOOOO!what if you just spent 3 hours designing a really coool ship and you want to keep it up to date with your technology?

Also if you have large fleets, it is an absolute essential to be able to upgrade a design in order to avoid long and painful upgrading of each ship idividually.

In order not to overwrite the previous build. I just use a suffix like, G-1, G-2 and so on.

Or you could just pick one of the ships in question, click the upgrade button in the context area, and tick the 'upgrade all ships of this type' box above the class-to-upgrade-to list.

yes but i don't have a problem if there are actually ships of that design in service.

What i mean is... when i have a cool design of a ship, but no ships of that design in service and i want to build one... of course i want to update its weaponry before building it, this is where i am having the problem.

I want to avoid changing the name because i end up with too many ship designs everywhare driving me crazy every time i start a new game.

I like to be able to run a particular ship from start to finish. At the end of the game i simply reset it's weaponry back to piss weak ready for the start of the next game.

Say you play Thalan.

Then you design your Battleship (for instance) without any Functional components and save it as Thalan Battleship.

Next time you play,,as soon as you have researched Large scale building,,the ship will appear in your Shipyard.

Ass whatever components you desire and then save it under another name,,for example Mighty Battleship,,which you will use when playing.

Thats a good idea!

Although it dousnt solve the problem of too many ship designs building up.

At least it would make it very easy for me to clean out the 'ships' folder in the saved games directory without loosing any good ship designs.

Thanks

To keep from having zillions of ship designs, you could use the "delete" ship design rather than "obsolete" ship design.

So...

Your "core" cool-looking ship is called "Battleship" that you want to keep forever (I'm following BP's post here).

You add your current best weapons and upgrade it to "Mighty Battleship"

You research a better weaponry, so you upgrade to "Super Mighty Battleship" from your "Battleship" template.

After upgrading any of your "Mighty Battleship" to "Super Mighty Battleship", use the "delete" function to erase all traces of "Mighty Battleship" in your folders/files.

Are you talking about an 'in game' delete function? I would like to know about that, it would be a very nice feature??

Its in the shipyard. Bottom of the screen. Says 'delete'.
