Minimize to Tray w/ Firefox not working right

Hiya,

I did a search and found some old posts from the beginning and middle of this year that had this same problem so I figured I better post again.

I'm having trouble with Firefox minimizing to system tray. The icon goes there, the window minimizes for a fraction of a second then returns back to maximized again. Goes so fast you can hardly tell it actually tried to minimize lol. Windows IE7 works fine, most other things so far seem to be fine, just Firefox doesn't want to cooperate.

Anyone have any clues on what to do with this? I just installed Firefox 2.0 yesterday (helped to fix a download problem with Suites I was having so Firefox is a must at this time if I want to use my Theme Manager functionally). Others that posted were using 1.5 so I'm going to confidently assume that the version of Firefox isn't the problem on this. Any suggestions? Would be nice to be able to make this minimize to the tray correctly.

Also, just for extra info, it does minimize fine to the task bar, the icon stays in the system tray though until I dbl click it and then it disappears till I hit the minimize button on the Firefox window again.

Thanks for your assistance on this.

No one out there that works with this program can answer anything on this? Nothing was settled previously about this problem either so what do I do please? Would be most helpful if someone would at least answer even if it's to say you are not sure what the problem is and are working on it or anything at all rather than nothing.

I had no trouble with minimizing to the tray before - as in before WB5 and per pixel

Been a while since I tried, but if I remember correctly using older skins still works.

It's not the version of FF - had the issue with 1.5 & 1.7 - but not quite sure it's not a FF issue (same as the jumping/jittering using FF & WB & bookmarks toolbar) - WB is made to skin IE - FF has it's own skinning method

I'm pretty sure Firefox interrupts the normal minimize procedure to perform some special management when it is minimized.

For example, if you go to your Sounds control panel, and set a sound to play when a window is minimized, this sound will not be played when you minimize Firefox. Windows, and presumably any other application listening for minimizations are not getting the messages because Firefox doesn't let them through--it handles this on its own, so to speak.

This is speculation, but I'm pretty sure the problem lies with Mozilla apps in this case, as they don't play nicely. For every feature like minimize to systray or show thumbnail, I imagine special considerations must be made solely for Firefox's funny behavior.

Unfortunately I don't know of a workaround either. I've just resigned myself to not expecting minimize and restore, etc. features to always work with Firefox or Thunderbird.

Thanks for some replies here, unfortunately, I had no problem with it minimizing before the new 2.0 version of FF at all. Used to minimize same as anything else did so althought it 'may' well be in FF that the problem lies, it still needs to be addressed I would think since there are a vast majority of people using FF nowadays. I do hope something is fixed for this, it's quite irritating to say the least lol. Thanks again for the replies, hopefully someone that 'does' know what is or isn't being done will say something too.

Have you brought it up with Mozilla?

There is a bug report on the bounce-back behavior Wolverana describes:
<a href="https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=305454">BugLink</a>
But no resolution.

You might get it to at least stop rebounding and behave the way you want with this extension:
<a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2110/">Minimize To Tray</a>

which itself is extended (prolly won't need this):
<a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2831/">Minimize To Tray Enhancer</a>

thanks I'll look into that addon rabidrobot and see if it helps out.

I got the minimize to tray addon and it works, as long as I disable skinning on Firefox which I guess will have to do for now lol, kinda sucks since the skinning is most of the reason I bought Object Desktop to start with lol. anyways thanks for the help guys, hopefully someone will fix this problem since people been asking for fixes since the beginning of the year I would think they are working on one but who knows.

The devs at Stardock start with the assumption that apps are using MS Windows as designed. If other app developers choose to do something different (that may change in the next build) it's likely very hard (and expensive) to modify thier app to handle ALL the possible combinations.

Your best hope is that the more people in the Mozilla community hit this bug and the community developers make a change.

I understand that Zubaz, but considering the major popularity of FF over the other alternative browsers, I am almost sure it's the most used browser outside of IE so I would actually think Stardock would be accomodating things like that. In all actuality there really are only 3 to 4 major browsers out there, so its not like there are 20 or 30 to work around. I do know how it is to have to work around a billion little things like different programs that utilize it, I'm sure many are not even considered, but considering it works with a billion different other types of windows software that they do skin, why not Browsers? I guess that's my opinion of course lol. thanks for the info tho

I had a related problem where I turned on Minimize to Tray only to turn it off shortly afterward. Unfortunately, the windows still minimized to the tray in addition to minimizing to the taskbar. I unloaded and reloaded WindowBlinds but it didn't fix the problem (although I never unloaded, rebooted, reloaded. I'm lazy I'm guess).

Anyway, this is what I did to fix it. I opened Start > Run... > regedit and did a search for 'MinToTray'. In my case, only one instance was found and it was for WindowBlinds. I set the 1 to 0. Problem solved!

Hiya Hinano,

Well the only problem with that is that I 'want' the minimize to tray on for things not off. You can turn that on and off in the windowblinds options actually as to whether you want it to minimize apps to the tray or not. The problem is so far only with Firefox though not minimizing correctly and doing exactly what you said, minimizing to both yet not minimizing at all. Shows up both in the system tray and on the task bar but then pops back open right away.

I was able to solve it by just setting Firefox to not be skinned with windowblinds and by using the Firefox addon called MinimizeToTray. Basically that turns off the minimize to tray option for Firefox only, while still being able to use it for all other apps. Works like a charm now, just sucks that I can't have Firefox skinned since it looks pretty cool even on browsers.

depends on the skin also. I'm using ChaNinja Style and a double click on the top bar sends it to tray
