Making ship templates for a custom race

I want to make template ships to use in a custom race, including the ones for medium, large, and huge hulls.

Is there an easier way to gain access to the bigger hulls besides starting a new game and playing it until you research the appropriate techs normally? I tried using the cheat to instantly research a tech, but it seems that the cheats haven't been included in the expansion beta yet. (I have tested the cheats out sucessfully in the regular GalCiv2)

If you play the 'battle of the gods' scenario, you begin the game with all techs researched.

Yes, I'm aware that the 'battle of the gods' scenario gives you all techs, but as far as I can tell, scenarios are another thing that hasn't been included in the DA beta yet.

I was just playing around in the custom ship templates and the only way I can see to use them at this point is to play a game with the style you want designed. Design them all in game, then assign your saved designs to a custom race. Seems this feature would really benefit from an external ship designer. Not external from the game, but accessible without being in game.
