svchost.exe spikes cpu usage to 100%

hi everybody,

i just reinstalled windowblinds today. i was having a problem a couple months ago: my cpu use would suddenly jump to 100%, stay there for several seconds, and then drop; a few seconds of rest, and then jump again. i read a lot about the issue on the internet, and all signs pointed to virus. i scanned and scanned, and came up with nothing. so, being the compulsive person i am, i wiped and reinstalled windows.

over the past few weeks, i've been slowly but steadily reinstalling the programs i used to have, keeping an eye out for this problem. today, i reinstalled wb, and the problem came back, immediately! if that doesn't isolate the cause, i don't know what would. (i also installed object edit, but haven't actually used it yet.)

(i left out one step: i also use litestep; after i wiped, i first reinstalled everything *except* litestep, because i got the sense that it was the problem, but it started happening anyway. so i wiped again, and started over, more slowly this time.)

if i end the offending instance of svchost.exe (there are several, which understand to be normal, and all but one are perfectly fine), things get a little funky, and wb stops working.

this is my laptop: 1.3ghz; 1g ram; 64mb video card. (this was also happening on my desktop, which i also wiped: 3.2ghz; 1g ram; 128mb video card. the desktop now has a 256mb video card in it, but i haven't put wb on it yet--i'm more cautious with that machine, because it's my work machine.) i use windows xp pro sp2 for an os, and mcafee and windows defender for protection.

any ideas for what i can do? would dropping to wb 4 help?

thanks,

autrui

Not something I can say with confidence, but I doubt WB5 has anything to do with it...I have been running alot of SD apps for a long time with few problems, but I have never had any luck with litestep ( or nextstart, for that matter). I CAN say that I have noticed that windows defender can get a little goofy and hoggish...anytime my machine seesm slow, I can shut it(defender)down and all problems go away, so that might be a place to start...anyone from SD have any info re: apps w/ windows defender?

Not much help, was I?

Been running SD apps 3 yrs - been running the defender 2 - haven't noticed any problems

there are other 'svchost and svchost.exe' posts at the WC forums (I'm at SD forums, no employer access to WC to find them)

I had a problem with Windows update that caused teh same problem you describe.

Try this: turn off windows update, reboot, report back if anything changes.

Right click on "My Computer" and select Properties --> "Automatic Updates" and turn the updates off.
