Sensor range bug?

I have a recon ship that I put 17 Sensors Mk4 (gives +2 sensor range), but the ship still has an actual sensor range of 15 !!???

I have built the (eyes of the universe?) wonder.

scanner range is capped at 15. i would guess it's to limit the amount of info the ai has to consider each turn.

i didn't notice the cap until i had built the wonder, too, and thought that the wonder was overwriting the range, but it turns out it's just capped at 15.

i miss my scanner range 42 ships from beta

Massive sensor ranges made the game crash for some reason, so the cap was introduced.

I think it was because if you had unlimited range after a while you would be able to see the entire map, which would be to much for the game to display all at once especially in the larger maps.

I posted many times that the AI's lack of interest in sensors (they don't even research the cheap first sensor tech that gives +1 to your ships' sensor range) places it at a disadvantage. Brad replied that was done for performance reasons.

They always get all the sensor techs in my games.

Well, at least, they end up with them.
When an AI contacts me to give me a little money I always give them several techs in return. The sensor techs are always part of the package.

But I have never noticed any dramatic slowdowns because of it.

I've done some different kinds of experimentation, and I haven't noticed any problems with big sensor ranges in the game. There is a slowdown factor when your own ships are moving, but the AI seems to process everything okay. I haven't tried giving the AI a large sensor bonus or the eyes of the universe, though, so maybe the problems come up then. Still, even then, with the eyes of the universe disabled and no sensor bonuses it should be possible to raise the cap permanently.

For the game with (no mods) the 15 parsec range makes sense. Despite the "eyes of ..." wonder, come on - what ship, starbase or planet could see EVERYTHING ???
If you want to mod this feature, well then go for it ... but other wise it is a good game limit IMHO.

Thats fine. Just, it would be nice to know when designing the ship. cause in the ship design window the range keeps increasing over 15 if you keep adding sensors...

I think that's a generalized issue with the ship design interface code.. it doesn't take into consideration the boni you accumulated (permanent or semi-perm).

Ie, perm: +1 speed at various levels of engines, +1 sensors at sensors, +x range
semi-perm: "eyes of..." means don't add sensors...

Yeah, I got burned as well. Created a whole line of ships called AWACs, built them at several planets, and when they started churning out I realized they seemed to do nothing at all. Then I searched the forum and found this thread.

Oh well. At least I know now.
