WB 5.1 quirks

Ever since I upgraded from WB 5.0 to 5.1 I've been experiencing a host of minor problems. It seems that after I restart my machine, I have unload WB to reapply any skin I'm using (it doesn't matter which skin it is) because some elements are buggy. For instance, the start button is a white square and there are little white ghost lines around open windows. Sometimes I have to reapply the skin several times to get it to render correctly.

Another problem deals with Illustrator CS2 (v.12) For some reason, when that app is open, the title bar dissappears after I've minimized the window and then restore it. (this happens only in Illustrator- other apps are unaffected). I did not have this problem with Illustrator when I was using WB 5.0, and it appeared right after I started using WB 5.0. I can set WB not to skin Illustrator, but I'd rather not do that if I don't have to.

er, I meant to say the problem with Illustrator appeared right after I started using WB 5.1!

It may be that unless someone else is experiencing the same issues as you provides you with a solution that your best recourse to get assistance would be to contact support@stardock.com.

Well, this is pretty pointless.

You got the best help available from the community. Your problem sounds like *YOUR* problem, not WB.

In any case . . . email the official support channel or figure it out yourself.

Rudeness is not appreciated.

If this is *MY* problem, then why did this only start happening after installing WB 5.1? Just a huge coincidence? WB 5.0 worked just fine, and now I wish I hadn't updated. As for the "rude" comment, I apologize if anyone was offended. I did not see Hankers comment before posting it. I was thinking that no one was commenting after 4 hours, in which case it was pretty pointless! At any rate, I will see what I can do about the problem through other channels. I will bother you no more on this issue.

are you using WindowsFX?

Okay, I said I wasn't going to bother anyone about this, but since Bichur was kind enough to ask a question...

Anyway, no I don't use WindowsFX. Nothing about my system has changed since I switched from WB 5.0 to 5.1. I'm thinking maybe I just ought to uninstall WB completely and reinstall v. 5.0. It did fine for me.

Thanks for the help.

I apologize if I misinterpeted.

Is this common to all skins or just one in particular?
I asked because I found some other earlier post with Adobe, WB & WFX.

It's gotta be hard to come up with a product that skins windows, and then get it to also skin other apps (which in some/a lot of cases don't like to be skinned.

Have you tried the other per app options besides total exclusion?
Sometimes just skinning the title bar works for some apps.

Sometimes using a different or older WB version skin works where a per pixel one won't (Antares is a good fall back on skin)

Bichur- It may well be that Illustrator CS2 has a problem with WB 5.1, wheras it didn't with WB 5.0. However, I have never had any problems with skins, per-pixel or otherwise, until I upgraded to 5.1.

Lantec- some seem worse than others when it comes to the ghosting and white edges, but the missing title bar happens with all skins.

Zubaz- Water under the bridge. I was feeling a bit frustrated that day, so I didn't examine the comments to see that one had been posted by Hankers.

If the original WB 5 stand alone was from the e-mail link and then you upgraded to 5.1 using SDC, try un-installing using SDC, reboot and install WB 5.1 using SDC.

I know I used SDC to obtain the update and run it. However, I didn't uninstall WB 5.0 using SDC. Do you think that may have made a difference?

Yep, I think yrag might be onto something.

If your version 5.0 was the standalone or trial version and you did not uninstall it before installing 5.1, it's possible there are some dll mismatches. You may have to go through a slightly tedious process of uninstalling 5.1 via SDC, rebooting, reinstalling the standalone version, switching to Windows Classic skin in WB Config (to unload WB), uninstalling the standalone version via Add/Remove Programs, rebooting, then installing 5.1 via SDC - cumbersome, but might fix you up if indeed you did not uninstall 5.0 first.

Let me provide a little more detail about what I did, just so we're all clear:

I was running WB 5.0, which I installed originally via SDC. It was not a trial version. I uninstalled it using "add/remove programs", re-booted, and then checked in "Program Files" to see if there were any remnants of it left (can't remember if there were, but if there were, I deleted them).

I then installed WB 5.1 using SDC.

I don't know if that will change any of the advice given, but I thought I'd better make sure we had all the details. Thanks to those who have responded thus far.

Weird. I've never seen WB in add/remove after installing via SDC.

Maybe (just maybe) you might consider moving all your downloaded skins somewhere, then zapping WB out, reboot, then download a new one via SDC.

just a thought.

The Zapper

than again, it could be your configuration and WB/Illustrator - I found a few posts concerning Adobe products (just not real recent and few & far between)

Yes, I am aware of a few minor compatibility issues with Adobe, but it was never a problem with WB 5.0. Besides all the white edges, etc. are throughout, not just in Adobe apps.

That's what I was thinking of doing. I suppose I can download a new version of 5.1 as long as I have the serial # from the first one I downloaded?

Absolutely.
