When NOT to point out mistakes

 I see the Liberal practice of pointing out spelling errors is still alive and well.

Here is a handy guide to know when NOT to point out spelling errors.

1. Never point them out in an article where you also make spelling errors, it is just to easy to use spell check and find out what mistake you might have made.

2.When pointing out these errors make sure the person you are ridiculing has an actual education at least on par with your own or it just looks like you are being an asshat{<not a real word}

3. when choosing to poke fun, make sure you can take it as well as dish it out.

I am glad you put this article up MM. I was going to do one along these lines too, but mine would be taken as bitchy.

JU users (NOT ALL) do have a habit of criticising others language, spelling, writing and typing skills. It is so unneccessary to do this to one another as all it does is belittle the person being criticised.

I have pointed out to one or two persons I have noted doing this on others articles and pointed out their own errors to them to show that they are unfairly critical of others when their own is not too perfect either. It has not been taken well and indeed I did not expect it to be. It is argued that people are doing those they criticise a favour, I do not accept that, I believe it is wrong to do it period.

asshat{

tis so to a real word! it is going to be in the dictionary soon no doubt! hahaha :: I wish someone would draw a pic of an asshat - it would probably be quite comical.

thanks jennifer, I get corrected all the time, but no one pokes fun at me, most folks here understand I left school {was asked to leave for the good of the school}
in the 10th grade and have a huge problem with spelling and grammar, the ones that do correct me do so gently.

I've seen a few forums that have started to include built in spellcheckers. I wouldn't mind seeing one of those implemented here (as well as many other places). Then again, with the built in firefox 2.0 spellcheck, it is not as big of a deal.

For me using spell check is how I have learned, I make fewer mistakes and am always pleased when I "hit" spell check and find no mistakes.

I'd join the party and purposely misspell things...but it's such a pet peeve for me. I don't often ridicule another's misspellings unless their blog is riddled with them...then it drive me absolutely insane. And of course, I've been known to slip up here and there...but I don't mind if people correct me, helps me learn.

that is the difference for me, correct me yes, ridicule me, no.

One of the nicer features in Firefox 2.0 is that it underlines any words that aren't spelled correctly. It won't correct them for you but at least it brings your typos to your attention.

I'm with Zoo on this; posts filled with spelling mistakes drive me bonkers. We all slip up, sure, but some posts are so full of mistakes, I have a hard time reading them.
