Space Rangers II Has STARFORCE?!?!?!

I just read a review (that several people agreed with) that focused on the BOXED RETAIL VERSION of SRII having StarForce, the most evil of evil insidious copyprotection programs on the market! Say it ain't so, StarDock! Say you didn't include StarForce in the digital download version! Nooooo! With even that not being the case, I'm surprised that SD would do business (i.e. by the rights to a game) with a developer that would use StarForce... TELL ME IT ISN'T TRUE!!!

It's not true, stardock have removed starforce from digital distribution.

That's why Space Rangers 2 being on TotalGaming.net has been so newsworthy -- the game originally shipped with Starforce but because of the success of GalCiv which has no CD copy protection, we were able to persuade the developers of Space Rangers 2 to have the TotalGaming.net version have no DRM whatsoever.

You wouldn't be able to do DRM like starforce without a disc anyway, right?

But here, here, I would not buy this game with starforce, but from what I've read now I probably will.

thanks!

Will a comparison of the sales between the DRM and the non-DRM version ever be available for public reading?

I for one would be really intereasted to know the success of the game both before and after they started selling on stardock. If the results are positive it may go a long way to convincing other developers that DRM solutions only hurt them.

Btw, having a blast playing Space Rangers 2!!

Nope, I got it from the old political machine demo, which is from the stage of the game when it still had starforce embedded.

What is the difference between the demo and the full game? Is there any more stuff to download for the full version; 1G is a big download, I assume the 'demo' is the full download, with limited access?/

After downloading the demo, it was another hour and fifty minutes on DSL to get the full game. Can't remember the entire size.

On a loosely related side note, X3 Reunion is being re-released without Starforce Protection, http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=148505

Taken from the above article:

"Version 2.0 features new content along with gameplay revisions and engine enhancements. Starforce copy protection is additionally being ditched, and the title is now being squeezed onto one DVD - apparently these two changes are "addressing the issues that matter most to gamers", according to Paul Lombardi, CEO of Enlight which will publish the revised game."

Let's hope that more publishers realise how unpopular Starforce is.

The demo times out after 2 years of in-game time has passed. I've found that this generally equates to 1-3 hours of gameplay depending on what you do in-game.

Hey, this is great, I really wanted to pick that one up too. I like it that at the same time big publishers are driving hell-bent into DRM, a lot of smaller companies (with better games) are getting rid of it.
