Retail availability?

Does that suspiciously retail-box-like image, seemingly with the words 'Dark Avatar' on it, posted on the main page a couple of days ago, mean that DA will now be sold through normal retail outlets and not just via download?

Please say yes ...

Well, if you only want the expansion, you are stuck with downloading it. But in february 2007, a Galciv II gold edition will be available at retail, containing GC2 and the Dark Avatar expansion.

BTW, you should take a look here http://pc.ign.com/articles/737/737915p1.html .

I have to wait for the gold version. But I promise I will totally buy it when its retail.

Mmmmm. I was afraid of that. I hate to think of how many editions of GC2 I'll have by the time Stardock has finished releasing expansions ... Galciv2 Gold, Galciv2 Platinum, Galciv2 Diamond, Galciv2 Iridium, ...

Oh well, at least that article seems to imply that the expansion will be a bit bigger ...

So any of you Stardock people reading this... are those of us who have to wait for retail going to get some kind of price break since we have already purchased versions of the game. I mean, why should we be penalized for our internet access if we are unable to download the expansion due to servers, download time, or just a simple lack of internet connection? I think you assume that everyone has internet access when I see marketing strategies like this, where the download is available but if you want the hard copy through retail, oh well, guess you'll just have to pay more hard earned greenbacks to enjoy our product. I read this forum from work but I play at home, i.e. no internet or at least unreliable dial up. Not to mention download issues from both sites, which there are a few people in here who have experienced problems with both, and can vouch for this. It's a great game and I want to play it, expansions and all, but with more and more hurdles to overcome, I am starting to wonder how bad I want the expansion. Retail is how I go, period. If I have to order it online, I will. But it will definitely be the last time. And if I have to buy retail, and purchase a game which I already have, I will do so unfortunately, but never again, not for Stardock products, not for anyone's products. You guys really need to rethink your "retail" philosophy. Sure you want to make money. Ever heard that sometimes you have to spend it to make it? Or how about just keeping consumers for your products happy? Or what about people who don't go online but do "cruise the shelves" looking for that next must have title. Did you think of all of those in your marketing sessions? Do you realize how many people might never see your products if you ignored retail? Yes, I know it will be at the store eventually, or so you say, but again, why should we be "penalized"?

Actually, if the past is any indicator, retail can be a little bit cheaper than buying online. The publisher distributes their product with an MSRP, but places like Walmart always discout retail prices by at least 10% or so. Online sales are always at retail. The good thing about about buying online is that Stardock is getting 100% of the gross sale. They only get wholesale for the product when they sell to a retailer.

Unless I got it wrong, you can preorderand pay the shipping & handling to have a cd sent to you.

WWW Link

That should help people who can't download the game.
If, on the other hand, you just can't purchase it online, then i think there is no solution, which is a shame.

The retail price for the Gold Edition will be $39.95. However, you will be able to purchase Dark Avatar on CD from Stardock for $29.95 plus shipping.

the gold edition will cost less than GCII did at first???

Yes. I think that the idea is to have new people able to play Gc2 + DA without paying too much. As well as offering people that have GC2 but no satisfying way to donwload DA a mean to get DA without paying too much

Ahh.. I still want only to pay for DA only at shop...

Will the Gold edition contain the Collectors edition of Dread Lords or the normal version?

It will be the normal version, but it'll include all the in-game content from the Collector's Edition since that was integrated around v1.2.  We haven't nailed down exactly what's going to be in the Gold Edition box, but it'll contain an updated manual at the least. I'd also like to get a hotkey card in there.

A hotkey refernce card would be cool for the new players. I know I played for a couple of months before I figured out that I could rotate the map using the CTRL and arrow keys.

One question to the online-purchrase... what's with other languages, e.g. french or german? Are they included in the downloadable versions or have we to wait for translated versions?

Then you have a problem. Stardock aren't going for a standalone retail release as its so expensive and there are all sorts of timing issues to navigate through.

Buying direct from Stardock for the CD to be mailed to you is no different from buying from Amazon or whoever. Unless you are against buying anything at all online for some reason then there is nothing to stop you from doing this.

AFAIK all direct orders from us are English-language only.
