Random event ideas here...

Well here's some random event ideas we've had that we hope to put into the bonus pak. But we want to hear from you. What kinds of events would you like to see and if they're doable, we'll try to get them into the bonuspak and you'll be able to play them on the day the game comes out.

Here are some of ours:

#1 Galactic Plague. (Odds: 1 in 2000 turns or 1 out of every 5 games played).
A plague hits the galaxy with the effect of slowing population growth each month and slowly starting to actually cause a population crash. When this event occurs, a new technology appears available to all players. If they research it, the plague goes away -- for everyone. But it's very expensive so players can eitehr gamble that an AI player will go and take care of it or they can take care of it themselves.

#2 Ultimate Power. (Odds: 1 in 3000 aka 1 out of every 8 games played).
This is similar to #1 except it has a drastically different effect. A technologys hows up to STOP the ultimate power. For you see, as long as it's active, each month the major civilization that is weakest gets 5 points added each month to one of their 30 abilities. Some of those abilities are pretty meaningless but others are pretty important. So you can sit back and let them become hyper powerful or you can put a stop to it (or an other player can put a stop to it.

# uh its like 30 or something by now. Universe Stretching

The Universe is constantly stretching out making all the planets farther apart from each other. soon it will reach the point where you will be unable to reach any neighboring systems unless you research a way to stop it.....

#47 ??? Dirty details revealed: The galactic newscooperation has cracked your personal files and reveals your plans for galactic domination => Relations to all other races drop.

#48 Love affair: A senior member of your political party has a love affair with a cute bugeyed girl. Good civs receive bonus due to improved galactic understanding. Evil civs loose a lot of seats in the next elections.

#49 Refugees: Refugees from space look for a new home: Good civs can integrate them on a planet or even give them one planet in their zone of influence => ( bonus population + bonus ships etc.) Evil civs have to enslave them destroy their ships afterwards they get a population bonus due to fresh slaves.

#50 Superstar: A galactic "superstar singer" gives a concert on one of your planets: god civs: productivity drops for x turns.....

1.you find a transmission interception device, wich let's you
a)block a particular race from contacting other races, or in a particular size of the galaxy all communication (except yours stops) for X turns (perfect for an attack if your enemy has an ally)
b)let's you listen to other civ's so each turn you get some info on another civ (info that has been sent from one of their planets to another(also research data)) untill the machine suddenly stops working

2.you can have a race that travels around the galaxy, trying to survive without setteling, so they steal something here and sell something there, you could loose/bye technologie, small ships, info, or you can ask them something like "if you encouter race X, tell them that we adore them..." so after a few turns your relationship with that race gets a boost. Or tell them we have hundreds of ships stationed here (in case you are weak and can't handle a war(so basically let them tell lies))
if those "nomads" are caugth stealing something from you, you can decide to take all there goodies

3. You have a minor race that is really stupid, the first mayor race that visits this planet are thougth of to be saints/gods, so the minor race ask to join the major race.

4. If you pay tribute to a minor race every turn they ultimatly try to join you (like in botf)

5. An alien race is conducting tests, they want to buy a deserted planet in your system for a lot of money

6. If you stay in orbit of a certain planet your hp will get lower but your shields will gain power, both permanently

belongs with number 6 :: though if you stay to long in that orbit your hp will go below zero and that ship will explode

Great proposals everyone..
Got some too, hope it wasn't said before.

Mysterious ship/ruins found - Extra research/invention. (old)
Galactic Lottery - Extra money
Wonder found - Immigrants flock to planet(s)
Mad Scientist - Planet created/destroyed
Space Girls - Young girls singing group raising moral

Oh, this one ain't original but would be lot of fun :

#51 - Mirror universe (one every not so often :p )
A space/time warp opened to a parallel universe and a new Civ appeared in the galaxy : it has EXACTLY the same characteristics of YOUR civ (same # of planets, people, same tech, ships, bonuses ..,) BUT his alignment is EXACTLY the opposite of yours !

Event: Skin of Evil
Affects: Only good major civilizations

The event: “Our scientists have discovered a way to extract the negative and bad elements out of our bodies ultimately making us a more pure, and better race. Once these elements have been extracted our alignment will shift more toward good and our morale, and population growth, will receive a bonus empire wide. On the down side, the discarded elements might form a conscience of its own and must there for be discarded on an unoccupied planet.”

Options:
1.)Do nothing (morale decreases for x number of turns)
2.)Go ahead with the procedure. (you get morale and population bonuses, but must set aside a planet in one of the sectors you control to dispose of the waste.)

Consequences of option 2:
The skin of evil can be put on any class planet and still survive. Your civilization runs the risk that this skin of evil will develop its own minor civilization hell bent on destroying the ones who did this to them (this would be a second event which you caused by taking your chances with the first event mentioned above). If this happens they automatically turn the world you put them on into a class 15 world (if its not already). They can then colonize just like any other minor race, but they can attack any planet in any sector that you own and take it over. They do not attack anyone else except their makers and until you destroy them completely they will keep coming for you until you are dead. Whether this second event takes place is entirely dependent on whether you choose option 2. If you choose option 2 and this next event does occur later down the road, the new minor civ should proably start with considerable power to make war on you, otherwise you could just crush them as soon as the event takes place and it would provide no real challenge or consequences to you first action.

COOL! There are some really good ideas here. Okay, when you see them in teh bonuspak you'll know why.

Few More:

1. Insect Frenzy - The insects on a planet start to populate faster and faster on each turn for X turns. This has the random result of:
A. Total loss of planet
B. Total loss of all crops
C. Happiness level decreases, while the manufacturing gains due to the people needing the insects to be controlled.

2. Planetary Core Disruption - The core of a given planet is disrupted and violently shifts the entire planet on it axis. This has a negative effect or a positive effect depending on the planet it happens on.
Negative Effect: A lush populated world is thrown into an Ice type age lasting for X turns (50+or-).
Positive Effect: A non-productive inhospitable world is shifted into a very productive, rich world that benefits the player for the remainder of the game.

3. System Wide Black Out - Due to a violent Space storm all communication with your other planets (Own, Friend & Foe) are totally lost till the storm passes through and its residual effects have dissipated. this takes X turns.
This is game wide problem. When it occurs it effects all players and all planets in the storms area of effect.

Again, again enough for now.

EDIT: Number 3 Above.

You could also have the added effect that ships caught in this storm would suffer damage or loss of some smaller craft.
Also, a storm like this would still allow you to move ships but others would not know about it. Sneak attacks, retreating a fleet that is hopelessly outnumbered, etc.

BTW, one of the things that is surprising is how mnay of these ideas are already in 1.0. I would say a near majority of them are actually already in.

Idea # ???:
A minor civilization could have hidden something since a while or since its beginning. It could have a strong influence on other minor civilizations (maybe also major) like bringing some (maybe others also) minor civs to decide which way they take (going against or not...). What could have such an effect? Here's some events:

1- A minor civ doing something morally aweful and others may decide to cut relations with anyone staying on the minor civ's side. Like using females as in vitro recipient (to make anything... my idea comes from Dune novels' gholas: clones that have the one it was cloned from's memory/abilities. Or eugenism projects, or anything else.).

2- A new religion arises (in your civ or in a minor civ). But this religion could have some serious implication and maybe take some expansion. (idea also coming from Dune)

3- A totally independent group (like religious people) could decide they want to expand militarily. This could come in parallel with a messiah that rose and/or a religion that rose. (idea also from Dune)

4- A group of minor civs could all have some secret alliance and from the moment it would be known it'd have some effects. (would this imply to permit secret alliance to players too?)

5- Some minor civs could decide they want to group themselves against another group of minor civs (beeing stronger all together, they'd look less to their allegeances to major civs).

6- An event could happen where everyone needs to take a side. Those not on same side may be a little cold one to each other (like exemple #1)

7- Some minor civs could decide to group in an alliance to be less dependant on major civs. Major civs would have to take position into this. (or it could be done only partially, like Middle East's OPEP)

I believe alot can be done about religions... They can rise, they can have some problems (like Galileo against Ptoleme), etc.

Besides, many "random" events I named have more chances to appear in certain situations.

How about a recreational/sports fad that sweeps through the galaxy. It would have to be something all races (or most) could participate in. Think about how wrapped up in sports and games we get.

Maybe it ends up being pub darts, anyone can play a little, but with laser darts, it takes a lot to master the art.

Does it lead to friendly competition, and an exchange of culture, perhaps augmenting the cultural influence of a leading participant? Does it lead to increased friction between competitors, and war trying to save face?

I often think the influence of sports is out of proportion to the benefit we gain, but there is no denying it is an influence.

Idea for "random event": ;p

In game news flash: "A human game developer fails at providing a game which "absorbs" a player into the strategy by not giving MiM controls to allow for greater player strategic decisivenss. For the next 10 turns, you don't have MiM control access to pick your techs or know what techs your enemy ships have. Your MiM game controls have been taken from your use for 10 turns." :notsure:

Event: Subversive Diplomacy
Affects: One empire that you are enemies with.

The event: "Our diplomats have been secretly contacted by underground elements with the (enter name) empire. They propose, that if we back them financialy they might be able to pull off a cou'de ta effectively changing the government."

Option 1: Do nothing (relations with your enemy stay the same).

Option 2: Support the underground ( cost X amount of bc per turn, lasting 24 turns, then you get a report on whether they failed or not)

Consequences of option 2: You could choose option 2 and they could fail quietly and alls you lose is the money you have been paying. Or they could fail and expose you which could mean war if relations are bad enough to begin with, but regardless relations would suffer. Or they succeed and you find that the new government is no longer an enemy but a friend with much improved relations with that empire.

Note: Subversive diplomats should only come from an enemy empire and that empires government would need to meet a certain low approval rating. Of course this could also happen to you, with your diplomats attempting a cou' if your approval is too low.

Random Events:

1- BROWN DWARF: A "rare" brown dwarf suddenly ignites. This suddenly improves the habitability of its planets, making a *useless* system now into reasonable and useable quality.

2- WEAKENING STAR: A star's fusion reactions suddenly diminish, reducing the star's habitablity.

A little more on the "Brown Dwarf" event:

Prior to the brown drawf igniting, the star appears on the map as a dull brown star. After it ignites, it appears as a normal bright star, making a previously useless system into a usable system. Perhaps 2 or 3 brown dwarf events per game would be fun.

Accidental EMP Burst

Nuclear engine of space ship under construction accidentaly explodes releasing a powerful EMP (electro magnetic pulse) that destroys all electronics on a major continent of the planet below or the constructing space port.

Can Occur only when a planet or space port is constructing a spacecraft of battleship size or greater.

Economic production a the planet is reduced by 50% for X turns while damage to infrastructure is repaired.

Economic production on a space port is reduced by 100% for X turns until damage is repaired.

Event: Galactic Olympics
Affects: Empire that wins gets a bonus in influence until the next Oympics are held.

the event: Every 4 years the civilizations of the galaxy get to gether to host the Galactic Oympics. Each empire's participation is up to them, but whoever wins the games (i.e. takes home the most gold medals) gets a bonus in influence empire wide, and has better relations with minor civs, that lasts until the next olympic games 4 years later.

Your only options are to participate or not, so this is basically more of a scheduled event like elections or U.P. votes. To give it a little incentive you could pass a U.P. resolution that bans any empire currently at war(only with another major civ) from participating in the games, or this could be the default rule subject to change thru U.P. interaction. The devs could decide how they would calculate who wins the games each 4 years, but the bonuses from winning would give all major empires an incentive to not be at war at least when game time comes around.

I really like this idea cause it seems very original and kind of different. I hope. ;)

Warship Crashes into Starbase

Eventually, someone is going to crash a starship into a Starbase. Much like the a Captain of a Cruiser accidently hitting an oil tanker or a cruise ship ramming a pier.

News Flash: Warship crashed into Starbase XXXXXX. Admiralty launches major investigation and relieved ship's commander. Heavy casualties reported.

Effect: 50% for each module on star base to be destroyed, 20% entire starbase is destroyed.
