AI attacking transports lag

is it a bug or my hardware?

I started this game on 1.2 and all was well until a galactic wide war broke out in the late game. I had built an achivement theat prevented my transports from being destroyed by enemy ships (dont remember what it was called), yet after the war started the AI sent vast numbers of fleets after my transports. It apeared that they were going through the motions of attacking the transports (without success of course ). While this would have been funny since they were tasking a hundred or so ships against a target they could not kill there by saving my planets from attack, it resulted in a lag of 3 to 6 min for a turn to elapse (from hitting the turn button until the button was re-lit). Made it hard to play. I dont think it is my hardware, I'm running a P4 @ 3.0 GHZ with a gig of RAM.
Welcome anyone thoughts on this. I really dont think it's a bug since I'm sure if it was someone would have reported it before me ( several forum searches failed to turn up anything), but I really dont think it's my hardware either...

Found out what the name of the achievement I build was and found a post on the bug already, sorry for the spam...
However, that person did not report any lag with the issue. Anyone have any thoughts on where that leaves me? Hardware seems the obivous answer, but...
