Pinned

Not that I mind or anything...but in the intrest of fairness....why did the ST mod get pinned and the B5 one isn't?

P.s. It belongs in this forum since this is the forum where the mod discussions are.

I also would like to see the bab5 mod pinned---every member on our team would agree that it was the bab5 mod as well as the example that was placed in the game that helped us enormously in building the star trek mod we were able to release!!!!!

It had fallen off the front page of the forum when I stickied the other one so I didn't notice it, stickied it now.

By the way, why is it that Stardock allows such blatant lifting of the Trek and B5 intellectual properties to be officially advertised on their forums via stickies? Don't they realize that could put them in a hideous legal liability situation should the real owners complain (especially since the Trek property has a noticeable video game presense in the market)?

I think the mods can only be sued if they are bieng sold for profit, the game is, but the mods are totally free.

Those who own the rights to B5 have also shown more support for utilizing the images and representations in various mods for quite some time now. I certainly can't say they'll hurt any profits by continuing to generate interest in such a great show via non-profit fan made mod(or mods).

That's one of the oldest misconceptions about intellectual property rights. If people can get Trek ships for free in a game they already own, why would they buy an authorized Trek game in the same game category? That damages the value of the intellectual property to its actual owners.

Interesting discussion point so I’ll throw my 2 cents into the conversation. From a legal standpoint Paramount has every right to ask us to stop working on a Star Trek mod for Gal Civ 2. If that would ever happen we would be more than happy to comply. I’m a huge Star Trek fan so I wouldn’t want to do anything that would considered detrimental to the Star Trek universe. With that being said I would find it highly unlikely that Paramount would take any legal action against anyone. Paramount has been known for being very lenient with the Star Trek fan base. Many people have created Star Trek mods for pc games. Stardock is by no means going out on a limb by allowing us to discuss our mod on their forum. In fact many game companies allow this. For example Egosoft the company that created X3 Reunion allows discussion of Star Wars, Star Trek mods on their forums.

Yes Star Trek does have quite a noticeable pc video game presence. I’m sure there would be a problem if their games were still in circulation. Most of them are considered old and can only be bought on places such as eBay. Many Star Trek fans have created and changed models. That’s why there are places like battleclinic.com so people can exchange models for different games.

There are even fan sites that produce Star Trek shows every month. They have a cast and even use computer cgi for the special effects. These shows aren’t sanctioned by Paramount but they have become so popular that even the original Star Trek TV show cast members have appeared in them.

In summary I applaud Paramount for allowing the fans to take Star Trek to a whole new level. We aren’t doing anything that is considered new here. People have been creating mods for their favorite TV shows and movies for years. Now if your one of the people that for some reason morally find this unappealing. Please do me a favor and just don’t download the mod. It’s really that simple. Your friend in Trek.

It's kind of hard to predict what Paramount will do. Every once in a while, they go on a "cease and desist" binge against fansites (probably whenever they hire a new attorney who wants to "make his bones" in the company). You're probably ok until the next eruption of legal paperwork from them.

I'm merely making it easier to find the threads for these highly popular mods. Stardock does not in any way endorse the mods, and *not* stickying them certainly isn't going to protect us legally if we let the threads remain otherwise and the IP owners come knocking.

In any case, the threads are just a discussion of the mods, which can really be done anywhere. The mods themselves are not hosted on stardock servers (aside from a few of the models hosted individually in the library--but other than looking like existing ships in these universes, they are all fan-created models to my knoweldge).

Obviously if the IP owners object to our simply hosting a discussion of the mods, we'll do as they ask at such a time, but at this point I don't believe there's any harm (since as mentioned, the mods are hosted elsewhere and what's here is just a discussion of them).

I find it odd that your actually complaining about this. Seems to me that you either don't like EITHER B5 or ST (in which case, why are you wasting time talking about something you don't like anyway) or your just trolling and probably dont even own this game. Either case, you can take your complaints and call 1-800-NOBODY-CARES-WTF-YOU-THINK.

I suppose that would be true if it weren't for the fact that you are wrong.

I like both Trek and B5, but I don't want Stardock to be hurt by litigation that could be prevented, even if the risk is low. I am satisfied by Kryo's response, and I've had my say.

STARDOCK HAS TAKEN NO PART IN THE CREATION OF, AND DOES NOT ENDORSE THE STAR TREK MOD. THIS MOD WAS CREATED SOLEY BY FANS OF STAR TREK IN AN ATTEMPT TO PROVIDE MORE INTEREST IN BOTH THE GALACTIC CIVILIZATION II UNIVERSE AND STAR TREK UNIVERSE. WE WILL NEVER MARKET THIS GAME FOR MONEY AND WILL ALWAYS SUPPORT BOTH STARDOCK AND STAR TREK IN ANY DECISION THEY MAKE CONCERNING THE FUTURE OF THEIR FRANCHISES. EVEN IF THIS RESULTS IN THE REMOVAL OF OUR MOD. THANK YOU.
