Recoloring IP themes

Just recently (past couple of weeks), I have had some problems with recoloring some IP themes...specifically all of skinhit's themes, and NextOS. These are the only ones I have tried to recolor recently. What happens, Icon Developer goes all through the re-color process, then a window pops up saying "Out of Memory". Does anyone know what could be causing this? I am running Windows XP Home, SP2, have 1 gig of RAM, IP version: 3.11.104, Icon Developer version: 1.2.0, Build 1066.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I discovered that after I wrote this. I downloaded it, but haven't tried yet to see if it fixes the problem or not.

Well, I downloaded and installed the updates for both IP and Icon Developer. Still have the same problem....with just the newer IP themes.

Anyone out there have the same problem?

I was able to recolor the package. But, when I saved it as...it would only let me save it as a .icl file. I can't pull it up in icon packager to apply it. Now what do I do?

in icon packager, highlight the package (dont try to open it), then under the file menu, try zipping the package. that should save it as an .ip file. let me know...

I can't even get it to show in icon packager. The only way I can get the file name to show is through windows explorer > Program Files > Stardock > Object Desktop > Icon Packager > kwiksilver.ip > kwiksilverSepia.icl. All that Icon Packager will show is the icon package theme....your original package shows as an .icl also, and cannot be seen through icon packager. This is so maddening! I love this set, and wanted to use it for the blind I am working on...but needed it a sepia color.

I re-colored it through Icon Developer...like you said above. I can't recolor the icons through Icon Packager (the icon for Icon Developer on the bottom right of the config window).

Using NextOS from orig posting, and assuming the new .icl is in a new folder, copy the.iconpackage file from NextOS folder, paste in new NextOS(plus color or whatever)folder, rename .iconpackage to new icon set name.

I tried that, and all I get in Icon Packager is a blank file...no icons! I guess I will just forget about re-coloring any of the newer icons. I have no problems with the older icons though...really weird!

sorry jazz...hopefully someone will see this thread and be able to help!

Hi jazzy, I just tried to recolor NextOS and had no problems at all. Latest builds, same as you have. I highlighted NextOS in IP, clicked on "File, Recolor Package", Icon Developer opened, I clicked on the "Recolor Package" button, gave it a new name and then recolored and saved. Closed Icon Developer, clicked to close IP and it asked if I wanted to save changes, clicked "Yes" and it closed. Reopened IP and the recolored theme was there and worked fine.
I'm not sure if you are trying it another way or the same, but it worked for me.

XP Home SP2 and 1GB ram. Good luck.

This is so nuts! I tried it the way you said...this time, I got the icons recolored, clicked ok, and then I got an access violation, and Icon Developer closed!

Thanks for all the suggestions...I really appreciate it.

I give up! I recolored an older theme and am using it now.

You got further than I did! When ID opens, I am given the option to edit package, recolor package or skin package. In its initial opened state the default button for editing the pack is highlighted along with the save button. When I click either the recolor or skin options the save button de-highlights. So, I have no way of recoloring. When I click to edit, it gives me the original preview in IP.

Donna, when you click on "Recolor Package", the "Ok" button will grey out. Rename the IP in the box showing, or add a word after it, and the "Ok" button will come back and let you continue.

It worked, Rick!

Thank you!

Boss, I was able to color the icons, but when I go to save, it gets done and says the icons are colored, then I keep getting a screen that says out of memory. When I re-open IP, all I get is a blank file. When I scroll to the file in the themes folder, it shows the file is there, but when I try to open it, nothing is there. This only happens with the newer themes.

It worked, Rick!

Okay, Donna....I'm jealous...you got it to work!

Maryjane, I did get an empty folder the first time I tried recoloring the pack, but the second time it worked. I used a different name for it. But I didn't get the error message at all. Let's face it, this program is temperamental. I hope the techs at WC see this and are able to help you in some way. I think I'd at least email Startdock Tech Support and report your own error messages and maybe they can help with that. We shouldn't have to 'wait for the next build,' especially with error messages. And there's obviously a specific issue if it recolors older packs but not newer pack.

Good luck!

Yeah jazzy, you have a different problem that I have no idea about, but from what Donna was saying...she missed a step. It took me a while to figure out changing the name the first time too..I was stuck thinking the program was messed up.

And glad it worked for you Donna!!

Donna, did you give the pack a completely different name, or just add to the name? What I have always done, was add the color I was making to the end of the name....for example, Silver Shine Brown (brown is the color I was making).

I just added another word at the end. I cant even remember what it was for the first pack. It's rediulous that we have to rename the pack to recolor it. I just added gray, like you do for the second pack. The grayscaled pack is up at SA if you want to take a look or download it. Interesting note is that it didn't save any of the 256x256 sizes.

Anyways, before Rick told me about changing the name, I had just tried another way to recolor the pack. Instead of opening IP and then navigating to recolor, I opened Icon Developer, then file, then batch, and then 'recolor pack from folder'. You should get a box that asks you for the originating folder location that you want to recolor, and then a loacation to put the recolored icons in. I made a new folder with the new 'color' name and went from there. Is that anything you've ever tried? I mean going through Icon Developer first?

I've used that method for packs of dock icons and it worked great. I imagine it would work the same for an IP theme also. Just different ways to try things..sometimes one works and another doesn't.

I had actually given up on the way I was trying it when you had posted your way of changing the name, Rick. And that way WAS the charm! It certainly is easier your way! Thats the way I'll do it from now on! I can't thank you enough for that one! It's unfortunate that there are no instructions on changing the name for it to work. I guess thats one of the reasons these forums and our skinning comrads in arms are here for!

I hope the way I suggested to MaryJane works for her.
