Slightly faster research

They say that "Creativity has always blossomed in wartime" things such as jet planes, the A-Bomb, and new forms of medicine were created during WWII. how about research speeds up a little when you declare war on another empire, and occasionally you get a new Tech?

If you do war right, all those things happen. You get more planets to put research facilities on, and when you conquer someone you get free techs. But I see what you mean. It would be cool to have like a government type that when at war, production of all types goes up 5-10% or something like that.

You could, and should, increase your production spending durring times of war, so it kind of does work like that.

No you shouln't, because your production spending should be at 100% all of the time.

well there is a galatic war with occasional momentary cease fires so all the time is war time research

Well, in the interval between war being declared on me and enemy ships actually appearing, I usually ramp my research way up...

Not always the best -- consider WW2 and the US development of the A bomb -- it was a military weapon but most would consider it a research/technology/social production project.

And I could come up with several similar situations for GC2.

However, I pretty much ramp MP up to 100% myself.

I think he meant your spending slider should always be at 100% (with that split between MP, SP, and Research).

Oh, sorry ... are the guys talking about getting a bonus to total spending -- like you could set spending slider to 115% -- very cool idea.

However, the techs that a player gets thru conquest are the same as a big research boost.

And it would certainly make it harder for me as I like to let the AI wear itself out taking out another AI civ while I get prepared to take him out. If he was able to up his spending to 115%, he wouldn't be as worn out. Oops - just gave Frogboy an idea.

Research is fast enough as it is, I think. And there's no need to encourage players to wage wars either.

because the government invested more in research and production (specifically that which aided the war effort) during times of war

i.e. during peacetime (just picking numbers to relate to GC2) spending was at 50%, then when the war started, spending was increased to 100%

the same idea can be applied to the game, but i always have my spending set to 100% anyway

The problem with giving any bonus if you are at war is how easy it would be to exploit. Just decalre war on some minor race who has no way of hurting you and stay at war with them forever. Nice idea but players are great at finding ways to exploit the game in ways that the AI won't.

Easily balanced out with significantly reduced population growth while at war.

Don't we already have this? If you want a planet to direct all of its efforts to a specific task, use the focus buttons on the planet screen (near the top, next to the manufacturing readouts).
