Factories

What good are they?

I think I understand GalCiv2 ok (well for a newbie). But one thing doesn't seem clear to me. Why build factories? If research does research, starports build ships, then as far as I can tell factories only help build other improvements. So ok, you want a factory or two per planet but then they are useless?

I've got to be missing something basic.

Starports build ships. Or do you mean more factories will result in faster ship building? (and would that only be factories on the same planet as a starport?)

Starports *allow* you to build ships, but it's the factories that do the actual building. If you have no factories, it'll take you forever to build your ships if you don't just purchase them all outright (a very costly tactic).

Thank you! That's very helpful. (a simple concept but an important one)

So, hopefully I'm correct in summarizing that factories speed up both ship building and planetary improvement building but not research.

Yup, that about covers it, the way I see it the factories assemble the parts and the Starport puts the ships together.
