Help with script for an idea

I saw a posting on here a while back and it gave me an idea but at the time the scripting was way out of my league.  But now it is something I want to try to get working but can't find the posting.  It was something to do with clicking the center of the screen and draging.  And the direction and distances draged depends on what happens.  I was looking for some help on what the script might be for it.

I want to have an object in the center of the screen and be able to click and drag but not actuauly move the object but deending on how far to the right or left the mouse is when I let up a short cut or something to that effect opens or activates.
