modding the tech tree

Hi people.


feeling impressed by some of the mods out there, and finding the tech tree somewhat small I was thinking about expanding it.


What I wanted to do is improve the weapons, but before I investigate further I wanted to know if you add a new tech, can you denote two prerequisites and also can you add two types of firepower to one weapon.

black hole eruptor
------ black hole eruptor with phasor cannons
doom ray

Example if you research up to black hole eruptor and doom ray can you merge the two and have a missile that has lasers built on to it so that it fires lasers at the target before hitting the target with missile.

Mad idea I know, but is it possible?

You can put multiple prereqs in the file, but the game is not designed for that and it will not work properly (or at all).

Weapons are (at least for now) limited to a single damage-type; the same goes for defenses.

ok i've tried it.....

i've added two prereqs to the tech tree and instead of the tree expanding the two weapons doom ray and blackhole eruptor it just doubles up the new weapon at the end of each of the weapons lines.


it didnt crash.........is there anyway of joining two tech lines?

I tried something like that yesterday, and I firmly believe that the answer will show itsel to me if I were to look at the Xeno Ethics line...

Ethics is special I think, you can set a tech to have an ethical prerequisite (Good/Neutral/Evil), so you can only research it if you have chosen that alignment.

Yes, but that must also mean that there must be some type of other variable it reads. Which means, another can be added. Checked/unchecked as you research. I dunno, maybe there's an even simpler way to do this, first I wanna try it this way and then I'll see if I can shorten it.

Nope. Xeno Ethics a special case. You can mod the whole thing so that good/neutral/evil are other things (say, democracy/monarchy/despotism) but you can't create a new tech with that same three-way switch effect on the tech tree.
