I can think of one possible reason: I brought the game over to a friend's house and installed it as a birthday present. Would that cause this problem?

Installing it on multiple computers is only permitted if you own them yourself. Installing it on your friend's computer and on yours is piracy.

If that's what you did, you likely inadvertantly registered it to his account. And in that case, you pretty much gave him the game, serial and all. Unless you work it out with him, it'll stay that way--Stardock will not move a serial from one account to another.

OK like many games I have I play them at home and then when I travel, 3 nights a week, on my notebook. I installed first at home and activated and upgraded and opened the Collectors Editions stuff. Started a game and then before I left transferred my save game file, my race config file, my sig.bin file to my notebook. Installed the game on notebook and just played it to see if the install went OK. Did not enter the serial number at that time. Now I update it with the sig.bin in the GalCiv2 folder run first update and then the second but it gives me a message that my game looks activated by the machine sid doesn't match.

How can I run upgraded version on both MY machines so I can keep one game going between the two like I do with lots of games?

Just contact support. They can unravel it.

I have GalCiv II on my two home machines, laptop, and work machine. This is the retail version. But they're all tied to my account.

Simply delete the sig.bin on the machine giving the error, and reactivate. The sig.bin is tied to the configuration of the system it was created on.
