*Sob* And i was so looking forward to it...

Whats happened to the dreadlords? (im using 1.2 btw)

After reading the game example about them I was all set for a long and grueling campaign ending in a climatic battle to erradicate them from the galaxy but I get to apocalypse (Playing tough the whole way) and i find they still suck! My problem is not their tech or their number of ships which seems about right its the fact that the IDIOT DL AI (and i really love the AI in this game really! kudos to the devs) loves its Huuuuuugge guns. I mean they can put 140 attack on a frigate but so freaking what? It still has only 18 hp or so. Their ships had NO defense and im not sure but probably no engines either. They were only moving at 5-6 which i could easily match. The no defense and massive guns really got to me as it meant the only possible tactic i could use was hundreds of light fighters with an engine and as much firepower as i could cram in. None of my ships could survive even a single shot but the DL were freaking eggshels too. I mean i had like 16 logistics and fleets of 8 LFs with 4-6 attack killing DL frigates for only losing 1 of their number. It just seems a bit silly and was absolutely no challenge cmpared to what i had been lead to expect. Oh and i was pissed i never got any good tech from invading DL planets. Miniballs II FTW!

I found the Dread Lords campaign to be easy as well, even at high difficulty.

I believe it may have been adjusted from the way it used to be. Some people have reported that the DLs in latest versions vuild ships with lots of attack and very little speed. They used to have a a strong attack, but also good defenses and high speed, which made them a much tougher foe.

I hear ya! Playing the "Dread Lords on Parade" scenario, I noticed that the best way to deal with Dread Lords was by sending wave after wave after wave of my men in vast fleets of tiny ships with evil weapons and lots of speed. It's pathetic that the Dread Lords don't get any HP advantage. Since they can only target one ship at a time, they eradicate one of my fighters, the rest of the fleet opens fire on the Dread Lord. Scrawny little fighters are so much cheaper than Dread Lord ships. And invading their planets isn't that tough. People are, after all, a renewable resource. Dread Lords are not.

I wish the Drengi were that easy in my current game... They and the Torians are the biggest races in my gigantic 10man game. Of course, this means the torians/drengi are pitted in an epic struggle against each other...and some how i get involved with it because i gave the Torians some engine tech Luckily, I was able to mass produce some missle/shields ships to counter the Drengi's Beam/shields they used against the torians(who oddly seem to use ships with low speed and alotta weaps/range to trek the galaxy to Drengi worlds)....This lasted for maybe a year, as the yor seem to have given the drengi MD/chaffe tech and I can see a whole square with a screen of 3md/6chaffe ships with troop transports behind ...And its just the early game

It's all luck of the draw. On the campaign, I have also encountered scenarios where the DL got lucky and got a defense and logistics techs from taking over planets. It's game over after that. No way anyone can go up against 4x 30hp/400atk/150def frigates. I have had that happen to me on at least 2 scenarios during my campaign (but luckily both times I was on the verge of blitzing the last DL planet by that point). Beware of what you wish for.

Actually they have defense tech (incredible defense tech) but the only ships that used it were escorts that for some reason didnt escort transports... I couldnt touch them but all the did was sit in a big mass and occasionally run back to their homeplanet.

heh ive never had a problem with drengin in bigs games as they never really get going in my games before everyone jumps on them. It always the torians and me for some reason that have the big epic game deciding wars.

And ouch i just got whooped in a duel by some drengin. They won b/c i spent too much money at the start and my economy crashed which got them ages ahead. Was heaps of fun and the first time i have used military starbases. I set up 3 around my "ckokepoint" planet and stood off wave after wave of drengin untill their tech just got too far ahead. I mean my HF-209s had like 3 beam 1 ecm + like +3 MD and +3 beam from starbases and they were going against superior numbers of 8 attack 3 def frigates! I love losing lol.

Oh and the miniballs Ii thing was what i got for capturing my first DL planet. a bit disappointing really as i just got phasors.

I got lucky in the campaign during that darn hard scenario, somewhere halftrough. Forgot the name, but I'm sure you know which one I mean. When I captured a Dread Lord planet I got the third best laser in the game. With that, I was able to build ships that could match the DL's ones. I researched up the logistics tree and the warpdrive tree and was able to make fleets with lots of lasers on lots of medium hull very fast ships. With that I was able to kick their buts. After that my luck ran out, because when I was building an invasion fleet, the DL's used a new tactic: in stead of sending one quite strong ship against a fleet of mine, they began making fleets too! That had me running for cover.

Now that I was on the defense, I had incoming troop transports. So I build super fast ships, with which I could blow up those unescorted transports. However, I had to research better planetary defense as I couldn't stop them all. When I had that covered I began a war of artrition: the DL's need a HUGE economy to run their empire, so I just sended a large number of very fast troop transports to conquer and demolish one of their planets, let them take it back, while having gained some nice technology in the process. That way, I insured that every ship that I destroyed, stayed away, because they didn't had the resources to rebuild it. After a while I was technologically advanced enough to match their ships one-on-one and that's how I could win. Needless to say that it took me a week or so to finish that scenario. But it was fun !

Siege or apocalypse. I think i might go do siege again and this time give the DL a chance to build before I wipe them out.

I got VERY lucky on one of those scenarios and stole the Black Hole Gun technology  Then I just packed it onto Cargo Hulls (1 shot from the Dread Lord ships will obliberate my strongest Dreadnought, and its faster and more efficient to build Cargo Hulls than Huge Hulls when both have the same mortality rates), along with engines and logistics, and crushed them.

Different people have differing degrees of success with the Dread Lords. Sometimes, it actually is tougher when you turn the difficulty down, because then your allies can't help you.

Beating the ai in ship combat is easy. Doesn't matter which "race". They all do exceedingly dumb things on a regular basis. All it takes is to spam the map with cargo hulls that are packed with weapons and engines. Forget about defense and all the other useless junk that serves only to reduce your speed and firepower for absolutely no worthwhile return...unless you consider a quantum leap in maintenance costs something to write home about. The late-mid through endgame defenses are so pathetically weak and over priced that I modded the doom/black hole weapons out along with more than half of the, entirely too redundant, weapons and defense tech tree. Never was too fond of the black hole gun's 'big purple pinwheel of doom' anyway. Eheheh

You people are lucky.
I abandonded my DL campaign several times after DL ships in the middle of game decided they need some ship defendes and got 16-50 in defense which made it game over for me.

P.S.
Normally, onlt tiny ships win against DL, but if they put defenses it *is* game over regardless what you have.

I have this problem as well in my latest game. I can't even scratch the surface of their ships with my battleships. However, I haven't come to the end of the line in phasor research. Do you think that it will help?
