IconX is Freezing

Help

All of a sudden clicking on an application running IconX freezes, and i mean freezes, it takes
more than 30 seconds before the app comes up. The only thing i can think i did was install the
new Extended Dialog app. from SD Central. it seems to be hogging memory , i got 1.5 gbs, so
on AMD64 3200 win xp. Can anyone think of what the problem might be?

Hello Bender,
I will pass your inquiry along to the appropriate person here at Stardock.

: Are you launching the application from an IconX customized icon on your desktop? Which application had taken so long to open?

How much memory is this using? Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to bring up the Task Manager and it will give you that info under the Processes tab.

Yes , File Manager , IE , Mail( Outlook ) , all applications are taking extremely long to open. I cannot check the memory used at this time , as this is only happining on my home computer, i am at work, but it seemd to me at the time that
it was 100% of the memory. Thanks for your help.

: Try running this file to reinstall the scripting host and re-register the scripting modules: http://sd.stardock.com/mike/apps/reinstall_scripts.bat (you will need to restart)

You might also try the following:

Right click my computer and select properties. Click the advanced tab, then click the Settings button under "Startup and Recovery". Click the Edit button.

Here's the line you need to modify in boot.ini

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=AlwaysOff /fastdetect

Set /noexecute to
/noexecute=AlwaysOff
(defaults to /noexecute=OptIn)

You will need to restart for the change to take effect.

I will try part two , if the first option does not work,
I am using XPHome, does that make a difference in the modify boot.ini lines?
So i take it i simply copy /paste your text to the boot.ini? Right?

Thanks

: All you need to do is make the entry have this in it: /noexecute=AlwaysOff if it currently has this: /noexecute=OptIn
In case you've installed to a different disk or partition, you will want to leave those other values untouched.

: If you're familiar with Process Explorer, that might offer some insight as to what's going on. This application can be found here:

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

You can check the Properties of IconX and under the Threads section, see which is taking up the majority of the CPU time.

: Unfortunately that was a broken image. It looks like the image was trying to load relative to your computer (hence the file:// url). Could you instead upload that to an image hosting site such as:

Photobucket
Imageshack

: I got that one, thank you. Do you have any security applications running that could be blocking scripts and causing IconX to not behave as it should? These could include anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc. software.

I only use McAfee Virus scan , i have the microsoft Windows Defender beta loaded. Nothing else
really, just what comes with XP , i think XP comes with a firewall, of sorts.

Bender50: I believe that McAfee Virus scan does include script blocking by default. This may be interfering with IconX.

I turned the script blocking off and restarted, same thing - 100% CPU. So i turned off realtime
scanning and no difference. Mike, i wonder if the extended doalog update had anthing to do with it. My troubles seem to have start at that time, probably not, but i cant think of anything else
that i was doing at the time. I have since turned/unistalled extended dialog, maybe it has to do with the 64bit prosesser? can you send me an older version of IconX . Maybe i can try it?

Thanks for all your help.

If you manage your updates via SDC and have it set to autoarchive, then all you need to do is unistall the version you're running and restore archive for an earlier version
Reply #19 Top
My Autoarchive was not set
I guess i should set it, so how can i get a previous version?

Thanks

: Since you're using XP 32-bit, I would assume the fact that you have a 64-bit processor would not make a difference. If you've uninstalled Enhanced Dialogs, it should no longer be imposing any settings on your system. One thing that might be interesting to look at is what modules you do currently have loaded. Close out of all other non-essential apps (and turn off the script blocking), then go to Start->Run 'tasklist /m'. You may want to email the results rather than post here as it'll be lengthy

Well, since we do say that you can use the software "forever", even after your subscription expires, one might wonder how that'd be possible if you had to reformat your computer (since only the latest versions are available through Stardock Central). Archives of software for expired subscriptions may be requested either at support@stardock.com or sales@stardock.com.

That said, I've emailed you an archive of the previous version of IconX and am interested to know the results.

Thank you,

i dont know how to install the archive version .

did it come as a .zip?

if so, put the unzipped file here: C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\BACKUP

then open SDC - use SDC to uninstall the version you're running (if not already uninstalled)- reboot if prompted - then in SDC > file > restore archive (Ctrl+R) > find it in the list (sometimes takes a few minutes for the window to appear)

After all's well, set SDC to auto archive (check the box down at the bottom)

I cant explain it.      , but it seems to be fine now. As sudden as
it stopped working ( using 100% CPU ) , it has started to work again ( 0% CPU ), I really
do not know why, i will experiment in hopes of duplicating the occurance , but not too much
because i dont want it to fail again.
Thanks to everyone , Mike and Bichur , who tried to help me , i really appreicate your time and effort.

Thanks Again
