What does "Allow AI to use CPU-Intensive algorithms" mean? Does it make the A.I. smarter, or is it something else entirely?

It lets the AI use more CPU time in between turns so it can use better algorithms. The algorithms weren't put in the game as-is because the time v intelligence of the AI isn't very good, but if you have a powerful CPU you shouldn't notice the difference.

I use the option and I've seen some nice little touches to the AI which has improved the game somewhat. Now the AI seems to be able to customise it's ships better to counter your own, whereas before they never seemed to bother, or did so poorly.

Has anyone noticed any serious lag issues while using the algorithms option? If so (or maybe if not), what are your system specs, so I can compare mine to see whether I have anything to worry about, lag-wise.
My system, real quick, is a p4 2.6, 1 gig of ram, gf6800xt w/ 128 mb.
