dynamic difficulty setting - possible?

Hi,

I like this game and all, and I try to play on "tough" and higher difficulty levels. In general, the game has 2 major intervals:

1) from start to med-game: usually AI is very strong during first stages. Unless I get some luck, I'm pretty much crushed.

2) med-game to end: either I am crushed or I'm getting way ahead of AI, and while AI players are not that far behind, they really have no chance of beating me individually.

So, I was wondering if it's possible to somehow boost AI player in the med-end game stage. Perhaps, if all AI players decided to unite against me after I get ahead of all of them, I could have a real challange. But it's too easy to ally with one of them and to defeat them 1 by 1

Yes this is a very good idea. Many times I wish that I could make the AI more intelegent in the middle of the game to give myself abit of a challenge when I will definately win.

I've often wanted the option of making the AI competitors a team verse me, because ofcourse you can set an AI to be a teammate in the opponent select screen but saidly that is the limit!

Has anyone actually seen an AI start an alliance with another AI? Or has anyone ever been approached by an AI to become allies?

The only alliances I've ever had in games are ones that I myself have instigated.

I like the idea of changing the difficulty level mid-game as an added option. One way it could be added as part of the story line is for GNN to report for example that the Torian race has a new, more aggressive/efficient leader. The Torians would then operate under a more intelligent AI setting then they were previously. The opposite can happen and a lengthy civil war within a race can result in a dumber AI.

AI alliances would also be good to gang up on the live player if the live player is badly beating everyone else (a new super-confederation that shares all technology, military forces, and bonuses.

Addman: Yes, I have.  What intelligence level are you playing against?

To those who think the game is too easy when you make allies... here's a suggestion...  play a game without being in an alliance?

Play a game where you drop out of the United Planets.   That changes everything.

Great idea.

And an option to set the difficulty range the AI goes through as the game progresses.

So, for example, you could choose starting diff at: Normal - and max diff at: Painful.

This would make the starting part of the game easier and then it gradually gets harder.
