How does one start a MOD?

I am trying to view the sample mod and ... who knows. I used to MOD for Freedom Force.

Also, what are some good MODs out there for a baseline?

My advice is to simply start typing. With time, you'll get better, and by then you should have enough material to decide what you really want to make.

You should be able to use any general text editor to modify these files, but you might be able to get a hold of some freeware programs for moding.
