ganging on the #1 civ

individualistic or groupie AIs?

I'm wondering, when assessing our military strength, does the AI refer to their own civ's strength, or theirs AND their allies'?

Coz so far it seems that if we are #1 militarily, we seem to get peace absolutely from everybody... all's well & dandy if we happen to be a peaceful civ ourselves... what i am curious to know is, if we are sweeping the galaxy one civ after another, does the AIs do anything more than having a minus to the diplo relations? Do they start to urgently work on building alliances with other civs... do weaker civs start to pay stronger ones to attack us... or any other active reactions...

well, I had a game where the drengin were quite powerful (#1 military), and they attacked the torians. A few turns later I got a message from either the iconians or the altarians (I forget which) saying the drengins attack was unprovoked and they were planning to do something about it, and that I was welcome to join in.

Next turn, the altarians and the iconians both declared war on the drengin (though they weren't actually allies). Needless to say, the drengin didnt last long, especially when I joined in the fun too.

it impressed me no end too

I have had this, too. Great AI to be clever enough to do this...

Also they WILL gang up against u in this fashion. I conquered/eliminated 3 races in a row. All other races in the game got, -a tendency to conquer others, plus a lot had -we know what you are doing. Relations with the 6 remaining dropped like a stone and 5 DOW on me, even through I was no 1 military, over 100 rating a head of my nearest rival (only because of the spin control center).

To conquer to your hearts content, do not deal the final blow. Once you have nearly destroyed them make peace, a bloodthirsty AI bully will finish the weak race off and take the bad guy rap.

Good fight, when that happened was on the ropes for ages, but I won through in the end.

I wish it would say something a little more informative than "we know what you're doing". I've seen it a number of times where I'm not doing anything for them to know about.

No warships near them or their bases. I'm not running out the tech tree to get a tech victory. I haven't conquered anyone. Just what the hell do they think I'm doing?????

troop transports somewhat near their borders or in thier territory causes that i think. one of these days i am gonna find out how far you have to stay away...1008 on my 'to do' list, lol

I did this to the Korx. I was irritated that they declared war on me for the second time, after I had gone through a lot of trouble taking back invaded planets. So, I created a fleet of custom ships and ran through their entire military. I vaporized at least thirty troop transports and every frigate I could find. I think I left them with about half a dozen ships, plus I had conquered 4 or 5 planets. I then made peace with them and then the Altarians finished them off.

Shortly after that, the Altarians, Drath, Torians and Arceans declared war on the Drengins and removed them from the field. Now I'm free to complete an influence victory!

I had this event before where I was asked to join in a war against the Korx with the Arceans and Altarians. Unfortunately, I couldn't join in the action as I was engaged in my own slog against the Drengin (I was playing as Drath).

I've also noticed that other civs can be quite cowardly at times. I tried my best to get some of the civs that I was friendly or close with, to come and help my struggle against the Drengin. Not a single one offered any type of help, nor could I even persuade them to attack the Drengin. I even made an alliance with the Iconians and then asked them, but to no avail.

Anyway, I pressed forward and eventually started to overcome them. I took Drengi and Kona, and was primed to take their last 6 or 7 worlds. I'd pretty much destroyed their military, when suddenly, The Torians, The Altarians, and the Arceans declared war on the Drengin, and tried to get troop transports to mop up their final planets. I was annoyed, they only joined so late so they could reap the benefits of what I'd done.

Quickly, I persuaded them to leave the Drengin alone, offering them Diplomatic Translators and a few outdated technologies in return, and proceeded to send my own troop transports. Just after, The Drengin gave up and handed their worlds over to Thalan rule. I guess the AI was determined not to let me have those last few planets.

I had the dregin declare war on me because they noticed that I was systematically conquering the galaxy. The war would have caused me quite a bit of trouble, except for the fact that the dregin empire was right behind the altarians who I was already at war at, so the war didn't become a two front one.

Any idea what determines which race another race will surrender to? I very rarely get a conquered race to surrender to me (conquered by someone other than me, that is), but they sometimes have some valuable planets. So, I wonder how that is determined?

There is a planetary improvement (Hall Of Empathy I believe, attainable by aligning with Good) which gives you a 50% bonus in the chance that another race will surrender their planets to you.

Apart from that, I think it depends on their current diplomatic status. They'll surrender to the enemy of their enemy in hope that that race will eventually conquer the people who conquered them. It may also depend on which race they are closet to at the time.

That explains a lot. I never align to good. There's no money in it.

Well...they are just playing like humans in real life . A lot of countries in the world did actually gang up on a losing country. Italy attacked France when Germany almost finished her up in WWII for example.

Oh man, I get that alot and I absolutly hate this. The AI is almost always crying out for your aid, yet when you need help in a dire sitatuation they simply give you the middle finger regardless of your relation factors. I have developed a moral dislike toward AI players and simply refuse to help them at all because quite frankly they never do anything to help me out.

Its even worse when your about to claim victory over an opposing empire to suddenly have another AI player attempt to invade the last remaining worlds for themselves, that has to be one of the most cheapest moves I have ever seen the AI do. Its like taking the benefits of your hard work when they didn't do jack squat to help.

It sure relates to the military strength of the empire you just vaporised. When their military strength vanishes, other empires become more confident and declare war. That the losing empire has only few planets left is IMO not the prime cause for the other ai's declaring war on them.

I think so. My current game the Yor got half of the galaxy and #1 military rating. All other races' military rating is about 60% of the Yor. I got the Altarians and Torians on my alliance so technically our military strength combined is greater than the Yor. I declared war on the Yor but my allies won't join me. But after I destroy some of Yor's fleets (very costly for me...half my fleets gone) and Yor's military strength drops, the Torians and then the Altairians come to my aid.
