Tactical Combat Suggestion

I was wondering if it is feasible to release a tactical combat expansion.

This can be an addon that includes only the tactical combat portion of the game. It can be a standalone game as well where people create and design ships to do battle with the AI, a tactical combat simulator. People who have it will have the option to resolve combat manually and tactically and people who don't have it will continue using the automated combat resolution.

I hope that by releasing it as an expansion, alot more can be put into it. Maybe it can include a more complicated version of the ship builder where component placement and location will make a difference in battle. For example, the ability to target individual components etc.

I am not sure how the whole tactical combat portion of the game will be done, but I hope that it will be as detailed as the old Star Fleet Battles boardgames and Cosmic Balance on the Apple 2.

where have you been man, could have used your voice months ago? The tak debate is officially over for gc2, but i'm still hoping for a turnaround. Big dog himself (frogboy) says no even for an expansion...too much for too little return or somesuch.

GC3 will probably have it in one form or another. Shame really, it would have taken GC2 to the next level.

They could do a spinoff--"Galactic Civilizations Tactics" would have a revolutionary new ship class system, and an immersive storyline about a young aristocrat who discovers corruption and a bit of mystery in the organizations he's put so much faith in. But no chocobos. Wark!

Seriously though, I'd LOVE to see a modern computer adaptation of Battlefleet Gothic (the Warhammer 40K fleet combat game). It'd be easy to do, since there's already a balanced ruleset written. Just throw in AI and and some randomization settings, plus a ship designer and multiplayer of course, and offer GW some sort of lucrative deal to allow the greedy hacks to let you publish it, and WHAMMO!

I'm tellin' ya, Stardock, it'd work!

(Not that there's the slighest chance in hell of it actually happening, mind you. But I love Battlefleet Gothic and think it'd be cool to have someone to play it with... even if it's not the tabletop version.)

Tactical Combat is on the table for GCIII

I would buy a standalone version of a Tactical Combat system. It would be a great way to fund the R&D for adding it into GC3.

The thing is, what kind of tactical combat will be included in GC3? I don't want some slapped on simplified system where you move your ships and then click attack.

I want something that is complex. I want the ability to roll my capital ship to expose stronger armor/defences/shields to enemy fire. I want my small and fast ships to be able to fly past and blindside bigger opponents. I want the ability to stagger fire my different weapons systems so that they do the most damage. I want the ability to target individual ship components and to send marines on a boarding mission. I don't need to control the marines on a tactical level but I want the ability to capture an enemy ship and study it's technology.

An optional expansion that works as a standalone game seems like a viable alternative. That way, for those that do not want tactical combat, combat can still be resolved with statistics like it is now.

like your style shyang, thats the kind of Tak that GC2 should have been shipped with in the first place.

All right Shyang! Another Tak Combat fan! Haven't heard what form Tak will take, just that it won't appear until Galciv3 [I know, that's a long time].

The important thing, though, is that we Takkers get what we've been dreaming of and the No Tak Kombat Klub gets to eat our shorts.

Battle Fleet Gothic is, IMO, the best game Games Workshop makes. It is blast! I wish more 40k players would pick it up.

Anyhow...
I'd think a tactical system like the one in Star Trek: TNG's Birth of the federation could have been intagrated into GCII with out to much pain. Its sad to hear its ruled out. This game could really improve if they just add a few more things (tactical combat, lan/hotseat play, internal politics options, carrier units.) but hopefully they'll be reconsidered later on.

To be honest, it maybe a little unfair to ask for so much from the tactical combat portion of GalCiv.

I guess it could be the non existence of anything out on the market and since GalCiv is probably the most recognizable space franchise in the last couple of years coupled with the fact that it already has a very decent ship builder, it is a no brainer to build on top of that.

Yes, I will love to see carrier units implemented as well. I have always wanted to see a strike fighter technology tree to be added to the weapon techs.

I would sell my mom for a Battle Fleet Gothic tactical game. And I agree that it is definetly the best game GW makes. The Babylon 5 A Call to Arms game by Mongoose Publishing seems similar to bfg (just picked it up and read the rulebook, but haven't played yet). Anyway, tatical combat would give GCII more depth. I'm sad to hear that they can't upgrade GCII with it. Hopefully it will be in a sequel. And with tactical combat, carriers would be feasible. Plus I would pay for a GalCiv Tactics game. But I agree, no chocobos.
