How do you research Shields and Non-Beam Weapons ?

I am fighting the Drengin in the mission for Ixith (2nd or 3rd mission) and they have strong ships and beam weapons. I don't see any type of weapon for me to research except beam weapons. I was told you could research other weapons but I don't see that. Also I don't see where I can research shield? Thank you. -Nathan

Some technologies are unavailable through most of the campaign. If you play a sandbox game though, all will be available.

If you cannot beat the mission without researching Shields or missiles, when you lose, there will be an alternate campaign opened up in a sector of the galaxy where research on shields is becoming possible.
