Names

Disclaimer: I LOVE GC2. It has joined my league of favorite games, nearly all of which are for the N64.

Anyways, can't the developers come up with some more original names? I mean all the proper nouns in the Korx race profile have the letter 'X' in them (without exception!), the Torian race profile is crammed with 'Tor-', etc. The only exceptions are the Terrans, Yor, and Arceans. Wouldn't you find it a bit odd if you discover a race of humanoids obsessed with the letter 'X'? At least there is some originality in the Terrans: 'Alan Bradley leads the Terran Alliance from his throne on planet Earth, orbiting the star Sol.' I think that sounds less generic than 'Lord Kona leads the Drengin Empire from his throne on planet Drengi, orbiting the star Drengia.' Perhaps I'm exaggerating the issue, but it still bugs me.

In fairness, "sol" is the only original thing about us. Terra is the correct name for Earth, hence the Terran empire. Just put it down to translation issues

I think he generally means that races are little too generic with their names. The Torian Confederation originates from Toria and the Toria systems of Torian Toria...

Well, what do you want? The Terrans basically come up with whatever we call the alien races. The Altarians are named so because their home planet orbits the star Altaris, which was discovered prior to the discovery of the Altarians. The Altarians probably have their own name for their star, for our star, and so on.

Actually, "Sol" isn't original. Sol is the name of our wonderful sun... hence the reason we're in the Sol-ar System. Although Sol may mean star in general, Luna also means moon in general, yet Luna is the name of our moon.

Following your rules, Odin314, I would be playing the Terrans playing the Drengin. In any case, I think it is too late to change the established names in the GC universe. I think we're all used Arcea and Drengia and etc, unless SD is willing to make some name changes for GC3. Can't we call the, for example, the Altarians' homeworld/star/leader by what they call them? Call them Altarians but, I don't know, don't make their whole civ revolve around the letters 'Altar-'.

Just create your own names. For instance, when I play as the Yor, I generally name my leader (is that me?) something like Baba Yor. I like to have fun with the names. I once played a custom civ game as the Hobbits living on the Shire. It was pretty fun seeing the message that The Hobbits have captured Dratha!

I enjoy naming my race the undead that way I can use artwork from warcraft.
It also fits well with my warmongering ways. The undead shield/symbol from warcraft 3 works well as a planet ownership icon. Plus it gives me an excuse to name my planets after wow locations and my ships after wow items and weapons. The Undead Horde have conquered the galaxy once again.

We have a pretty good artist at work, he spends his lunch updating a white board we have for play, usually with star wars genre drawings. My personal favorite is the depiction of me as "Kirk-2D2".

I probably got this one named after me as I function as a part-time engineer and part-time program manager and a part-time lead installer. If I do not change which language I am speaking from financial, to engineering, to technical, all the opposing groups here is "bleinegkk ti to blik pudbke dep bop". Which translates to:

Can you give me the total number of feet on the next CAT5E run and whether is has to be a cross connect or straight?

or

How much do you think its going to cost to provide the necessary pds (protective distribution system) for that next cable run?

or

Do you think we can get out of here after we get this run done?

I bet you can guess which one is which. Point being, the Pryde are referred to as Prydean, their star system is Prydea, their planet is Prydea Two (Prydelan). Their new systems will have other names though as soon as the Pryde earns them.
