Post 1.2 bugs(this info could fix a lot of bugs)

To the developers: Hi, I saw this game while watching X-Play on G4 channel and I was in awe of it because of the anticipation of waiting so long for a sequel worthy to master of orion 2...needless to say i can't give a hoot-n-hanny about version 3 it royally sucked!! However since playing this I've given another chance into the schemes and aspects of space games, finally they got it right to the most part there is only a couple things I would like to ask to see better created on the game as i will list them---- 1. In the game menus especially when you highlight or click on a custom map in the begining of the game it needs to explain what it is or if you click on the chaos map, that it would give a definition to the right side menu in the begining etc.. because I am left to darkness of what that map even means or what it looks like. 2. The game needs a better technology map, as it works well but i can hardly make out what needs to go next( like understanding better of why I need to have a phasor 1, 2 and 3), I wish you had it built like civilization 4, or at least make it its own screen big enough to look through it from end to begining easier. 3. After the setup has begun when you name your homeworld it names it your "Star" also. Please let us change the name of the "star" also or make it so it only names the planet! 4. Please make some better technologies especially where you can have like a atmosphere processing unit or something to be able to land on any planet to colonize it that is a 0, this is the future almost anything should be possible! 5. When i do the planetary assault you should be able to keep blasting from space with your ships to pulverize the planet below, then when you want to attack there needs to be a understanding better of what your techniques of invasion mean, because you never see a tidal wave or your mass drivers smack the planet or maybe even a doom ray to completely destroy the planet!!?? Man that would be awesome. I understand the vs. thing but I would like to see you implemente the stuff i said above. 6. Please let the planets be able to create a flux door kind of like a star gate that i can travel to planets faster also because going from ion drive to hyper warp isnt always fast enough. 7. Please let the espianoge stuff be better explained because it doesnt always work to the extent that i propose you made it for..the ai never really cares that your investigating there empire and you never are able to tell your spies to destroy or steal technology if you know what i mean. 8. In the custom make-up for new character it always leaves on soldering +20 and logistics +6 and loyalty + 25 you can click them off but should they even be there to start with? Always wondered if this was a bug? 9. Please make it so in the future you should be able to build anything on a planet, I understand what your team was trying to limit the micro-managment of the game but i sucks when you can't build a planet defense on every planet or at least make it so you can build a starport everywhere that only makes sense to me... 10. Please make the scrolling speed a little bit faster instead of clicking the map and pulling i like to go screen to screen, and you do have it but it can be a bit slow at times.... PS I know this is a lot of info for your team but you guys rock as i think so far this game is suited for some killer stuff for the future packs and developments.... Thanks again!! - Viithtrump

The carriage return button goes haywire on the forums occasionally, eg 3 days ago for me unless the above was just rush typed.

Please use paragraphs to make it easier to read your post. Apologies if it is the carriage return thing.

These sound more like feature requests than bugs; I think it's a little unfair to call them bugs both because there are people who will disagree with some of them (including myself) and because it unfairly paints the devs as sloppy. Some specific comments....

2) I'm not sure what you mean. Phasor 3v2v1 etc. mean that you may be able to design ships with more powerful beam weapon attacks. You can't have civ 4 like descriptions of weaponry because of the ship designer. I agree though that it would be nice if it was easier to navigate though. (maybe zoomable interface).
4) I disagree. I think it would ruin the tbs feel if tech could become godlike.
5) Personally, I do not need to actually see the type of invasion to envisage it.
6) Again, I think this would ruin the tbs feel. BTW, are you aware that you can attach multiple engines to a ship?
7) It seems a bit arrogant to say "it doesnt always work to the extent that i propose you made it for". It seems more resonable to say that your vision and the devs' vision of the role of espionage are different.
9) Not sure what you're saying. (Exceptional circumstances aside), I build a starport on every planet I own (though I'm considering changing this for strategic reasons. I don't think it is unreasonable to have Galactic Wonders and Trade Goods built only once.

Regarding point 10. The scroll speed can be adjusted under the interface tab in OPTIONS ie default is 50 I think and I have it set to 90.

I wish you had it built like civilization 4, or at least make it its own screen big enough to look through it from end to begining easier.

There's a "View More" button that lets you see and scroll around a little more at a time.

. Please let the planets be able to create a flux door kind of like a star gate that i can travel to planets faster also because going from ion drive to hyper warp isnt always fast enough.

I was always expecting this kind of technology in GalCiv I but eventually I realized there wasn't one, and it would really change the entire character of the game to have things not be "distant" from each other. It shouldn't be as bad in this game because instead of 9 moves I hear about people loading up with engines to move 36 or 45 moves a turn.

By the way, I saw the X-play show and I'm surprised it got anyone to tune in. They basically showed a Drengin ship moving into a planet on the main map and the explosion of the enemy ship. They didn't show the fleet battles, the ship designer, or the diplomacy screen -- all much more visual friendly. I wonder if Stardock could have provided them with better clips?

Another list of "bugs" which are actually not bugs... Just someone's naive idea of how the UI should work.

Sorry if you are offended by the word "naive". It is just that most of the points raised would not be changed by someone who had played the game for a while (e.g. planetary governors are simply not a good idea if you want to play the game on tough or above).

Would you sit in your new car and say... I'd put the handbrake here, I change the ratio of the gears, I'd change the adjust seat mechanism. It is just nonsense. Play the game as it is, buy another game or learn to code.

Obviously I got the response I was looking in doing my job to wake people up, For people that hate people like me telling them how the game really is--To all that responded to my post and took it out of context, "naive", you got to be joking, not playing it for awhile!! hah I've been playing this game and its first one since inception and back to Orion 1, 2 and 3, Khan 1 and 2 Civilizations, Warcrafts and several other games of this nature including games you've never even heard of before probably, and with over 20 years of gaming exp. from stinking consols to PC I think I have enough sense to know what makes a game of this nature work well. The other remark I want to make is I never made assumptions. I proposed an idea, to think I have the knowledge of what the developers were thinking is absurd, I am a gamer not the programmer, we are just here to give them new ideas, and I told it like it is. The programmers made a game that has some bugs and they want to know what long time gamers as myself seek to want in what could be for a better game. Otherwise I hate to think they wouldn't have a forum for it if they dont want feed back, it would be a waste! To the top poster everything the way I put it got scrambled when I copied and pasted it, so I wish I could have gone back and re-did it as its posted, too late. As to the tech tree, all I meant was to have such things as phasors 1, 2 and three and so on(as and example) eliminated to just have phasors makes more sense to me or give a better reason to have phasor 2 because just saying that it makes it smaller doesn't make much sense to me, it seems you could have another technology for that. And when your in a ship build it makes perfect sense to not show things that you have invented that are greater, (such as why put a sheild 2 on when I have a shield 3?) I hope that makes sense. As for the mouse movement, please understand, yes I checked the mouse scrolling speed in the menu before I posted this comment, and it is still to slow. Every planet you cannot build enough creations, one of things which needs to be on the game for sure, otherwise if you play to hard of level the computer overruns you, especially if you aren't able to build like a star base or a fortress outside the planet, its something I can live with but I believe it would make the game better. If you can't become godlike in the game then why play it, I mean this is Space man it should be unlimted potential! If I wanted a kill em all game in 2 hours I would play a warcraft or one of those kind. I want a strategy game where I'm unstoppable and a power might through technology. And by the way if any who reads this don't think there bugs then I don't care because to me they are, I bought the game like any of you, unless you ripped it off...And I have my opinion and you have yours, so I'll share it with any who will read for a few minutes. Have a nice day!!

Dude while you have some good points. (The ones I read before getting lost in the run on paragraph) And while you might have all that experience, you won't really get your point across if you don't learn to break it up a bit. It is a royal pain in the (south end) to read, and doesn't add credibility to your points.

Viithtrump, you have enough experience to know what works for you; this is not the same as what works. A classic example of this is "If you can't become godlike in the game then why play it, I mean this is Space man it should be unlimted potential!" - many of us play this as a tbs game as opposed to a technology simulation. I actually think that "unlimited potential" weakens the tbs side of the game. To put it another way, you are presenting yourself as "the knowledgable gamer" who knows how to make this game perfect. The problem is that there is nothing special about your opinion (nor, for that matter, your experience). For instance, I consider that the multiple factors affecting what ships you can build to add strategic depth. I like the fact that there is different versions of the same weapon type (although Phasors VII is overkill) as well as separate miniturisation technologies. I also like the fact that some planets are far less usable than others - this also adds strategic depth. You also are confused are the meaning of the word "bug". A poor design choice is not a bug. A bug is something where the program does not perform as documented/designed. Thus, while I find the technology tree interface clunky, I do not find it buggy as it does what it is supposed to do. I don't like the way it was designed but it is functioning as designed. EDIT - Carriage Return is on the blink. This actually is three paragraphs - four if you count this edit...

I also noticed point #8, where your custom races have +soldiering, logistics, and loyalty even when clicking the Reset button. Also, if you go into those categories and assign a point, then remove it, it removes that free bonus that was there. And if you click on the Reset button again after doing so, it doesn't put those free bonuses back in. I feel it's a bug.

Also, please note that for the forums, you can use the HTML code to manually insert line breaks/carriage returns. It's the only way that I've found to get them to work properly.
