Ship Buying/Market Place

Something I was thinking about. Perhaps nations who don't want to concentrate mass construction of ships can "purchase" ships from stronger military nations. I know sometimes civs might give you a ship or two for random reasons, or you can trade your ships for various items. But I was thinking perhaps if the AI becomes "weak" in terms of military strenght, and may not posses enough resources to mass produce their own ships they will simply ask for a variety of another civ's ships in exhange for cash or technology.

This should happen often too so races don't fall too far behind in military early on. I was also thinking about a "Market Place" of sorts. It would primarily cover ships where each race will have a bundle of ships they are willing to sell. You can check the schematics of the ships to see if your interested (weapons, armor, speed etc.) If your interested in the ships you simply contact the race and offer up (perhaps there should be a pre-set amount of wanted cash too). This way if your pooring out ship for ship and don't know what to do with them, you have a simple method of selling or "exporting" your goods.

I recently played a game where I was allied with the Yor, and we were fighting the Torians.

A Torian destroyer somehow appeared on my Yor border, well away from the front lines. How did I miss a medium hull, and how did it get there so fast?

When it attacked a freighter, I found out: It was a Yor hull! Apparently the Yor sold them a fighting vessel at some point. Whether it was before or after our alliance, I'll never know.

You can do this. I've never tried, but you can buy warships if you want.

Are you suggesting that the AI should do this too?

They will give ships away for free if you are in a war against someone they don't like.

I know, but its not in the way I want. The AI sometimes gives you like one ship at a time for free.. What I'm suggesting here is that you yourself can sell a "bundle" of ships in an organized fashion to the AI. Or you can "purchase" a bundle of ships from the AI. Not just giving a civ a free ship for fighting someone they dislike.

Think real world. Some of the world's leading exporters such as the United States and Russia (or the former USSR). Nations such as Australia and Canada purchase most of their equipment from the U.S and other western equipment, while nations such as Iran and India get the majoirty of their equipment from Russia (T-72s, Mi24s the works). I'm talking a market place where you can just purchase a bunch of ships from another civ. The giving of free ships is nice but it doesn't help much since the AI may only give you like one or two ships.

By this market place each civ will have a set of maybe a dozen or so ships "posted" up under their civ name and a preffered bargain price beside that. Or in their trade window there could be that "ship set" under a "selling" tab. You can also request to purchase a number of ships from that civ. Its works vice-versa for you too. This helps with civs that seem to always fall behind in military strenght. Normally in my games within two years one race declares war on a weaker race, and it seems to go one forever since peace treaties last a few months. Or if your race falls behind, you can request military goods from other races.

You can. Just open the diplomacy screen. It would be nice to by the actual design so you can make your own.

I was thinking the same thing. It would be cool to have auctions, perhaps every few months. Each race would post a set of ships for sale, and make bids etc. Could have controls were you wouldn't allow someone you didn't like to buy your ships too...

They really need a better mechanism for trading ships. (like listing the fleet names in the trade window, so you could trade whole fleets) Because of that, i've mostly never even tried to broker ships. (and how often does the AI have better ships than you, or you really need money THAT badly)

mebey some kind of "free market" bazzar ... where whenever you (or the AI) want you place your ships put a price on them, then anyone can buy them, kind of like buying and selling in mmo games

Well, to me it seems like the whole Ship trading thing was just a carry-over from Civ3's system where you could buy and sell workers from other Civs. Except that instead of being to able to buy and sell non-military units with your neighbours at reasonable prices, you can buy and sell all of your military assets at ridiculous prices. I really don't think they ever had any intention of developing the concept beyond "lol you trad ships now! kthxbye!!1"

I don't know, it doesn't really bother me.

Well lets see the points you havnt recognized.

1.You can technically do this, just in a diffrent process.

2.If you use your imagination this is already achievable.

3.As for the market place, this would be exploited but may be useful.

4.This would pose new bugs and glitches if we were to use the process you want designed, such as warring AI trading mega ships.

Explanation:The system you proposed would be hard to work out for the devs, it would also however open new possiblities.

Evalution:If you had examined the situation thouroghly you would find that this is achievable just not in the same process. You have learned from this and the post itself wasn't necesarry but educated you.

The AI does trade ships...

The Altarians at one point in my game were fielding nearly half Thalan based battleships... pretty weird.

What some of you aren't getting, is the fact that you have to do this in an old fashioned way. When you have a very large military with hundreads, maybe a 1000+ ships lying around & you feel the need to sell some, you don't want to go to the trade window & look for "Fighter 347, Fighter 890, Fighter 221" etc. individually & "bargain" for a price.

Even though you could do it, its not really plausible. The AI gives free ships to civs fighting someone they may dislike, thats not exporting thats more in comparsion to the U.S supplying Afganistan fighters with stingers to combat the Soviet Union back in the 1970s. I'm talking a real export & import market where you put a fleet of manufactured ships up for sale, & a few races offer to purchase them for a set price and vice-versa.
