Flagships? Starbase mobilization?

....and other useless things that could be REALLY cool.

I could be wrong, I might be missing something significant here but, do flagships have any special properties that make them worth keeping around? Furthermore, what is the point of being able to designate a starbase as a flagship ala Starbase Mobilization? For that matter, how do you even perform that task as I've never seen an option to do so? It would be great if flagships actually conveyed some sort of bonus in combat or morale. Also, if Starbase Mobilization actually meant you could zip around the galaxy destroying entire armadas or at the very least, produce ships from your starbase.

So am I missing something, or are these just unfinished ideas that never became implemented?

FLAGSHIP PLAN

During the eary game XPlore is Mission #1 ...
Scouts and Flagship are suited for this task ...
Once you get to Med Size hulls ... THEN
UPGRADE the fagShip to a Friggate ...

All so ....

I find that because of anomaly UPGRADES,
this ship is usually some kind of "Super Frigate" ...
which Mid-Game is a pretty good ship ....
Later game ... It just orbits my home world ...
Kinda like the - USS Constitution ...

Thank you for your responses but you completely missed the topic of my post. To reiterate and make myself more clear...

What makes a Flagship unique?

I understand that it is a survey ship and can later be upgraded -- thats not my point. My point is what benefits are conveyed to a ship that is given the title of Flagship, and are these benefits if any transferrable to any other ship in the game?

Kinda like Heroes in Warcraft III being able to share auras with other units. As far as I can tell there is no benefits of having a flagship. Is this an unfinished idea?

You are getting the concept of "flagship" from the tech description of Starbase Mobilization which says "make a starbase the flagship of your empire," but that's just misleading flowery language and doesn't translate into anything in game terms.

i think he is asking because of their reluctance to sell some ships, including the flagship. noone wants so sell a colony ship either iirc. and some ai seem to cling to scouts like grim death while other are only too glad to sell the,

sorry i can't really answer question tho, just say that i have wondered the same myownself.

i do make a point of killing enemy flagships just incase it has some kind of morale significance(doubt it does tho)

Grok,

The short, blunt answer is - NO !!!!!!
NO ship, fleet or ANY BONUS ....
It is JUST a ship ...
The reason you get it at the game start is to harvest
the anomilies (because you do NOT have that tech yet)
And that is IT. PERIOD.
This is not an "unfinished idea" or anything else...
Just a ship ....
So update it after survey work or SCRAP it ...
Your choice ...

There is no difference between your initial Flagship and a normal core survey vessel. It's just a name.

As Noumenon72 says, the text for Starbase Mobilisation is just words as well. It doesn't really mean anything.

As for why the AI won't sell certain ships... well it makes sense that they don't sell colony ships or survey vessels. If you bought these early in the game they would cripple that AI.

Starbase mobilization allows you to get your military starbases to give bonuses to ships. Thats what it means. Thats it.

I would just like to point out that flagships in real life don't give some sort of weird bonus to all craft surrounding them, you can take the best and the brightest aproach if you want... simply rename your most experienced bad ass ship "flagship"

I like heroes in warcraft 3 as well, but Galciv is a very different game.
